Purpose of the Role
The Production Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and controlling all feed manufacturing processes to ensure products are produced efficiently, safely, cost-effectively, and according to quality standards. The role oversees production operations, equipment performance, stock control, employee management, and compliance with feed safety, quality, and legal requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Production Planning and Operations
- Plan and coordinate feed manufacturing schedules.
- Allocate production according to customer orders and product requirements.
- Receive and manage new feed orders.
- Ensure adequate raw material availability in proportioning bins.
- Maintain sufficient finished feed stock levels for dispatch.
- Coordinate production activities across:
- Intake
- Storage
- Grinding
- Batching
- Mixing
- Pelleting
- Product dispatch
Quality Control and Feed Safety
- Ensure pellet and feed quality meets required specifications.
- Implement and monitor feed safety standards.
- Maintain critical control points throughout production.
- Conduct and supervise production line quality checks.
- Manage flushing procedures for raw material and finished feed lines.
- Compare batch reports with formulation requirements and investigate deviations.
Equipment and Maintenance Management
- Monitor plant and equipment performance continuously.
- Participate in planned maintenance activities.
- Report equipment failures to the maintenance department.
- Improve overall equipment efficiency and plant performance.
- Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly equipment efficiency indicators.
- Implement corrective actions to address operational deviations.
Inventory and Stock Control
- Plan and monitor stock levels throughout the production process.
- Ensure proper storage and stacking practices.
- Manage stock movement and inventory accuracy.
- Minimize waste and control sweepings generated during production.
Staff Leadership and Workforce Management
- Supervise and manage production personnel.
- Maintain discipline and workforce productivity.
- Ensure employee job descriptions are current and followed.
- Participate in recruitment and selection processes.
- Manage employee overtime and leave.
- Improve manpower utilization and efficiency.
- Conduct training and retraining on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Identify training needs and coordinate employee development initiatives.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHAct)
- Basic Conditions of Employment Act
- ISO Standards
- Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
- Ensure correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Promote a safe working environment.
- Enforce housekeeping and operational standards.
Reporting and Communication
- Complete and verify:
- Batch reports
- Shift reports
- Pellet quality reports
- Production KPI reports
- Communicate production statistics to employees.
- Report production backlogs and plant failures to the General Manager.
- Ensure effective communication with customers, suppliers, and internal departments.
- Maintain accurate production records and documentation.
Financial and Cost Management
- Participate in annual production and training budget planning.
- Monitor and control monthly operational expenses.
- Analyse milling costs and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Support operational efficiency and profitability initiatives.
Logistics Coordination
- Coordinate inbound and outbound logistics activities.
- Ensure smooth movement of raw materials and finished products.
- Support efficient dispatch and delivery operations.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Production Diploma.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an animal feed manufacturing environment.
- Minimum 2 years’ management experience within an FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) environment.
