Purpose of the Role
The Maintenance Hand is responsible for maintaining farm buildings, equipment, machinery, and infrastructure to ensure efficient and safe operations on the breeder farm. The role supports production by carrying out preventative maintenance, fault finding, and repairs while complying with biosecurity, health, safety, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance and Repairs
- Maintain farm buildings, equipment, and infrastructure in good working condition.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance activities.
- Perform fault finding and basic repairs on mechanical and electrical systems.
- Ensure all maintenance tasks are completed according to schedules and operational requirements.
Mechanical Maintenance
- Repair and replace:
- Chains
- Bearings
- Gearboxes
- Motors
- Mechanical components
- Carry out minor fabrication and welding work.
- Maintain feeding systems and related equipment.
Electrical Maintenance
- Repair lights and electrical fittings.
- Replace plugs and geyser elements.
- Assist with electrical troubleshooting and repairs.
- Ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently.
Plumbing and Water Systems
- Repair water leaks.
- Conduct minor plumbing repairs and maintenance.
- Ensure water systems function effectively for farm operations.
Ventilation and Environmental Systems
- Assist in maintaining:
- Ventilation systems
- Heating systems
- Air-conditioning units
- Support environmental control systems essential for poultry production.
Housekeeping and Equipment Care
- Maintain company housekeeping standards daily.
- Keep workstations clean and organized.
- Store tools and equipment safely after use.
- Ensure maintenance areas comply with cleanliness and safety standards.
Health, Safety, and Biosecurity Compliance
- Follow all biosecurity procedures and farm operational standards.
- Comply with Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies.
- Apply safe work practices at all times.
- Report hazards and unsafe conditions promptly.
Operational Support
- Work according to maintenance schedules and production deadlines.
- Support farm operations during peak periods.
- Be available for overtime, weekend work, and flexible shifts when required.
Minimum Requirements
Essential Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) or National Certificate.
- Basic knowledge of:
- Mechanical maintenance
- Electrical repairs
- Plumbing work
- Experience using hand and power tools.
- Ability to identify and repair minor faults.
- Good English communication skills (verbal and written).
- Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious.
- Willingness to work in a farm environment.
Advantageous
- Previous experience on a poultry farm.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Experience maintaining agricultural equipment and infrastructure.
