Job Overview
The Free State Department of Transport is seeking seven Artisan Production Grade A: Mechanical candidates to perform mechanical maintenance and repair services on vehicles, plant and equipment.
The successful candidates will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, servicing, maintaining, repairing and testing equipment according to prescribed standards. The role also includes preventative and corrective maintenance, breakdown and field support, maintaining technical records, ensuring workplace safety and supporting operational planning.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 10 or equivalent qualification.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- An appropriate Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal) in Diesel Mechanical.
- Ability to work at workshops, districts and field/operational sites.

Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Maintenance & Repairs
- Inspect vehicles, plant and equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and technical problems.
- Service, maintain and repair vehicles, plant and equipment.
- Test completed work in accordance with prescribed standards and schedules.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance.
- Provide breakdown and field support when required.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all completed work meets required quality standards.
- Comply with applicable technical and safety requirements.
- Ensure tools and equipment are used safely.
- Follow prescribed maintenance standards and procedures.
Records & Reporting
- Maintain accurate job cards.
- Update maintenance records and registers.
- Compile relevant technical reports.
- Provide input into operational planning.
Team Support & Development
- Supervise and mentor support personnel where required.
- Work effectively as part of a technical maintenance team.
- Maintain and develop technical expertise through continuous professional development.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a qualified Diesel Mechanical Artisan with strong practical skills in vehicle, plant and equipment maintenance. Candidates with experience in heavy vehicles, construction plant or earthmoving equipment will have an advantage.
The successful candidate should be technically capable, safety-conscious and comfortable with fault finding, preventative maintenance, repairs and field-based technical work.
