Job Overview
The Pharmacist Intern position is a training role for newly qualified pharmacists. Interns work under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist to gain practical experience, develop professional skills, and complete the compulsory pre-registration period required for full pharmacist registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
Job Description
Pharmacist Interns provide professional and quality pharmaceutical services, manage medication stock, participate in clinical and hospital pharmacy operations, and ensure compliance with policies, SOPs, and legislation. Interns also complete the required CPD programs and pre-registration training to qualify for independent practice.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Pharmaceutical Services
Provide pharmaceutical services according to the scope of practice for pharmacist interns
Participate in ward rounds, drug utilization reviews (DURs), and audits
Support chemotherapy preparation and satellite pharmacy rotations
Ensure safe and quality medication dispensing and management
Stock & Supply Management
Manage and control pharmaceutical stock and assets
Adhere to supply chain management procedures and statutory regulations
Training & Compliance
Complete 6 CPDs as required by SAPC
Successfully complete compulsory pre-registration
Work under supervision of a licensed pharmacist
Professionalism & Work Ethics
Exhibit commitment, responsibility, and strong work ethics
Work beyond the call of duty when required
Maintain teamwork and professional collaboration
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications & Registration
Matric
B Pharm Degree allowing registration as a Pharmacist Intern
Registered with South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as Pharmacist Intern
Current registration for 2026/2027
Knowledge & Skills
Strong work ethics and discipline
Commitment to delivering high-quality pharmaceutical services
Ability to work as part of a team
Knowledge of pharmaceutical legislation, SOPs, and supply chain management
