Role Overview:
The Anaesthetic Doctor will provide high-quality anaesthetic care across various surgical disciplines. Responsibilities include pre-anaesthetic evaluation, formulating appropriate anaesthesia plans, administering anaesthesia safely, monitoring patients throughout procedures, and managing post-operative recovery. This role requires clinical expertise, sound judgement in emergencies, and strong collaboration with theatre and surgical teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive pre-anaesthetic patient assessments, including history, examination, and risk evaluation.
Discuss anaesthetic options, risks, and benefits with patients to ensure informed consent.
Select and administer general, regional, or sedation-based anaesthetic techniques appropriate to patient and surgical needs.
Ensure correct equipment setup, accurate dosing, and adherence to safety standards.
Monitor ventilation, haemodynamics, oxygenation, and depth of anaesthesia continuously.
Respond promptly to intra-operative emergencies such as airway compromise, arrhythmias, hypotension, bleeding, or adverse drug reactions.
Collaborate effectively with surgeons, nursing staff, and the operating theatre team.
Provide post-operative management, including pain control, monitoring of cardiorespiratory status, and early complication detection.
Ensure accurate clinical documentation and handover to recovery or ward staff.
Key Requirements
Essential Qualifications
MBChB degree (South Africa or equivalent international qualification).
Registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
Completed Internship and Community Service (as required in South Africa).
Experience
1–3 years’ anaesthesia experience in district, regional, or tertiary hospitals.
Proven competence in administering both general and regional anaesthesia.
Mandatory Certifications
BLS (Basic Life Support) – valid.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – typically expected.
Advantageous Certifications
ATLS / PALS – depending on emergency/trauma exposure.
Specialist Requirements (If applying as a Specialist Anaesthesiologist)
HPCSA Specialist registration.
Recognised specialist anaesthesia qualification (MMed or equivalent).
