    Job Overview

    The Underwriter will review risk submissions received from clients, agents and referrals and determine whether insurance risks can be accepted in accordance with the underwriting manual and applicable authority limits.

    The role involves assessing new business and renewal proposals, evaluating risk, determining appropriate pricing and referring unusual or complex cases to senior colleagues where necessary.

    The successful candidate will also contribute to underwriting automation, risk management, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement initiatives.

    Key Responsibilities

    Underwriting Insurance Cases

    • Review new business and renewal proposals for completeness and acceptability.
    • Assess underwriting and rating information.
    • Provide price quotations within delegated authority.
    • Evaluate and select or reject new and renewal business within the assigned portfolio.
    • Refer unusual, complex or high-risk cases to senior colleagues when required.
    • Apply appropriate risk-selection and underwriting techniques.

    Underwriting Automation

    • Conduct allocated research and analysis.
    • Support the development and validation of automated underwriting processes.
    • Assist with improving underwriting systems and processes.

    Risk Management

    • Gather, monitor and analyse risk-related information and data.
    • Identify potential risks requiring further investigation.
    • Apply established risk management models, systems and protocols.

    Regulatory and Compliance

    • Conduct compliance monitoring activities.
    • Provide basic guidance on regulatory and compliance requirements.
    • Ensure that all work complies with organisational policies, procedures, regulatory codes and codes of conduct.
    • Obtain appropriate authorisation when exceptions to mandatory procedures are required.

    Administration and Reporting

    • Prepare moderately complex documents using standard office applications.
    • Gather, analyse and summarise information for reports.
    • Provide information and clarification regarding established procedures, processes and precedents.
    • Use external communication systems to access and provide relevant information.

    Continuous Development

    • Participate in performance assessments and development planning.
    • Attend relevant training and coaching initiatives.
    • Keep up to date with industry best practices, technology and regulatory developments.
    • Build knowledge through ongoing education, specialist media and relevant industry events.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants should have:

    • Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent.
    • Regulatory Examination (RE).
    • 2–3 years’ experience in commercial underwriting.

    Advantageous Qualification

    • A Diploma or equivalent NQF Level 6 qualification in General Insurance will be advantageous.
