    Job Description

    The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and non-blood specimens from patients accurately, safely, and professionally to support laboratory testing and diagnosis. The role requires delivering exceptional patient care while maintaining the highest standards of quality, ethics, and confidentiality.

    The successful candidate will ensure that specimens are collected, labelled, documented, and transported according to established procedures, contributing directly to accurate diagnostic outcomes and positive patient experiences.

    Key Responsibilities

    Specimen Collection

    • Collect blood specimens from patients using approved phlebotomy techniques.
    • Collect non-blood specimens where required.
    • Ensure specimen collection procedures are performed safely and accurately.
    • Verify patient identification before specimen collection.
    • Label specimens correctly and accurately.

    Patient Care and Customer Service

    • Provide compassionate and professional patient care.
    • Explain procedures clearly to patients.
    • Ensure patient comfort during specimen collection.
    • Address patient concerns professionally and respectfully.
    • Create a positive patient experience during every interaction.

    Quality Assurance and Compliance

    Minimum Requirements

    Qualifications

    Essential

    One of the following:

    • Recognised Qualification in Phlebotomy

    OR

    • Nursing Qualification as a Registered Nurse

    Professional Registration

    Applicants must be registered with one of the following:

    • Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Phlebotomy Technician

    OR

    • South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse
