    Job Description

    The Department of Psychology seeks a qualified and registered Clinical Psychologist to strengthen its academic and research profile. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychology modules, supervising postgraduate students, conducting research, providing clinical supervision to student psychologists, participating in curriculum development, and contributing to community engagement initiatives.

    The role also requires active involvement in departmental administration, academic leadership, student recruitment, and the promotion of a strong scholarly culture within the department.

    Key Responsibilities

    Teaching and Learning

    • Coordinate, teach, moderate, and assess undergraduate and postgraduate psychology modules.
    • Provide academic support and study guidance to students.
    • Supervise postgraduate student research.
    • Recruit senior students for postgraduate studies.
    • Contribute to programme development and curriculum review.

    Clinical Supervision

    • Provide clinical supervision for student psychologists’ case work.
    • Support the practical and professional development of psychology students.

    Research

    • Initiate and conduct high-quality research.
    • Produce and sustain quality research outputs and publications.
    • Participate in scholarly conferences and academic activities.
    • Strengthen the department’s research profile and academic identity.

    Community Engagement

    • Participate in and coordinate community engagement projects.
    • Support service-learning initiatives within the department and faculty.

    Administration and Leadership

    • Perform departmental administrative and organisational duties.
    • Contribute to faculty and departmental activities.
    • Assist in building and maintaining a strong academic environment.

    Minimum Requirements

    Lecturer Level

    Applicants must possess:

    Qualifications

    • A PhD in Psychology (NQF Level 10) for a permanent appointment.

    OR

    • A Master’s Degree in Psychology (NQF Level 9) for a five-year contract appointment, during which a PhD must be obtained to qualify for permanent appointment.

    Professional Registration

    • At least two (2) years of active registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Clinical Psychologist.

    Experience

    • Teaching, facilitation, tutoring, training, or relevant professional experience at tertiary level.

    Research

    • Evidence of research potential or productivity, such as:
      • Research project participation.
      • Manuscripts under review.
      • Conference papers.
      • Peer-reviewed publications.
      • Book chapters.
      • Significant progress towards a PhD.

    Additional Requirement

    • A strong academic record.

    Senior Lecturer Level

    Applicants must possess:

    Qualifications

    • A PhD in Psychology (NQF Level 10).

    Professional Registration

    • At least three (3) years of active registration with the HPCSA as a Clinical Psychologist.

    Teaching Experience

    • Proven experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychology modules.

    Research Experience

    • Proven research record with:
      • At least 5–10 publications in accredited journals and/or books.
      • Research leadership and scholarly contributions.
      • NRF rating or demonstrated potential to obtain one.

    Academic Contributions

    • Presentation of at least 3–5 conference papers or posters at national scholarly conferences.
    • Experience supervising completed master’s degree students.
    • Active involvement in national or international scholarly societies, committees, or research organisations.

    Additional Requirement

    • A strong scholarly record.
