Job Description
The Artisans Internship provides practical workplace experience to graduates and qualified artisans within technical and maintenance disciplines. The programme is designed to develop technical skills through exposure to maintenance, repairs, construction, installation, and workshop operations within correctional facilities and departmental infrastructure.
Successful candidates will gain hands-on experience in their specific trade while supporting the maintenance and operational efficiency of facilities across the Free State and Northern Cape Region.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Maintenance and Repairs
- Assist with maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, and infrastructure.
- Support preventative maintenance programmes.
- Identify faults and assist with troubleshooting and repairs.
- Ensure work is completed according to safety and quality standards.
Workshop Operations
- Assist in daily workshop activities.
- Operate and maintain tools and equipment safely.
- Support production and maintenance projects.
- Ensure compliance with workshop procedures.
Installation and Construction Support
- Assist with installation of systems and equipment.
- Support renovation, construction, and infrastructure projects.
- Participate in inspections and testing of completed work.
- Ensure adherence to technical specifications and standards.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Comply with workplace health and safety regulations.
- Use protective equipment correctly.
- Identify workplace hazards and report safety concerns.
- Promote safe working practices.
Record Keeping and Administration
- Maintain maintenance records and job cards.
- Assist with inventory and material management.
- Prepare reports and documentation related to assigned tasks.
- Support audit and compliance processes.
General Internship Duties
- Participate in training and development programmes.
- Work under the supervision of qualified artisans and supervisors.
- Perform duties relevant to the specific trade discipline.
- Assist with departmental projects and maintenance activities.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Applicants must possess a:
- National Diploma, Degree, or Trade Certificate in one of the following fields:
- Plumbing
- Electrical
- Brick Laying
- Welding
- Motor Mechanic
- Upholstery
- Carpentry
- Fitting
