Purpose of the Role
The Breeder Farm Supervisor/Chargehand is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and management of a poultry breeder farm, ensuring efficient operations, animal welfare, biosecurity compliance, staff supervision, and production performance. The role focuses on maintaining high standards in poultry farming while leading and developing the farm team.
Key Responsibilities
Farm Operations Management
- Oversee the daily operations of the breeder farm.
- Ensure production targets and operational standards are achieved.
- Monitor site performance and productivity.
- Plan and organize daily work activities.
Record Keeping and Reporting
Maintain accurate records and submit reports to management, including:
- Mortality records
- Egg collection reports
- Daily production statistics
- Water consumption records
- Feed orders and usage reports
- Operational performance reports
Poultry and Animal Welfare Management
- Ensure poultry are cared for according to company standards.
- Monitor:
- Feeding programs
- Water availability
- Vaccination schedules
- Spillages and wastage
- Report deviations and health concerns promptly.
- Promote and maintain animal welfare standards.
Biosecurity and Quality Compliance
- Enforce biosecurity measures across the site.
- Ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements.
- Monitor adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Maintain farm hygiene and disease prevention protocols.
Staff Supervision and Development
- Supervise and guide farm employees.
- Train staff according to approved training schedules.
- Coach employees on:
- Animal welfare practices
- Biosecurity standards
- Quality requirements
- Promote teamwork and effective communication.
Human Resources and Labour Relations
- Manage staff attendance and performance.
- Address employee relations and disciplinary matters.
- Assist with HR and Industrial Relations (IR) issues.
- Allocate resources effectively to ensure operational efficiency.
Asset and Equipment Management
- Ensure farm assets and equipment are properly maintained.
- Monitor installations and infrastructure.
- Report maintenance requirements and equipment faults.
Health and Safety
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
- Promote a safe working environment.
- Ensure staff follow safety procedures and company policies.
Minimum Requirements
Essential
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Strong numerical literacy skills.
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in poultry rearing or laying operations within a supervisory role.
- Good understanding of modern poultry farming methods.
- Commitment to animal welfare and biosecurity.
- Ability to apply poultry management principles effectively.
- Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
Advantageous
- Degree in Agriculture.
- Poultry-related training courses or certifications.
- Computer literacy in:
