Job Overview
The Occupational Health Practitioner (OHP) is responsible for maintaining workplace health and safety standards in accordance with South African legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act.
This role focuses on ensuring compliance with occupational health regulations, monitoring workplace safety, supporting employees’ health and wellbeing, and managing occupational health programs. The practitioner will travel to various corporate stores across the Free State region to assess compliance, provide medical guidance, and implement safety and wellness initiatives.
The position also requires working with confidential medical information and supporting employees through health-related issues, workplace injuries, and wellness programs.
Job Description
The Occupational Health Practitioner oversees occupational health services, safety compliance, employee wellness programs, and related administrative functions.
1. Occupational Health and Safety

Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and minimize workplace injuries.

Monitor and analyze Injuries on Duty (IOD) reports and trends.

Provide guidance on safety procedures and incident management.
-
Identify workplace risks and advise store managers on safety improvements.
-
Compile and submit monthly safety and incident reports to the National Office.

Ensure proper management of first aid resources and medical waste disposal.
-
Participate in Health and Safety Committee activities.
-
Conduct environmental risk assessments in line with legal requirements.
2. Occupational Nursing
-
Conduct baseline medical examinations for employees in designated roles.

Perform exit medical examinations when employees leave specific positions.
-
Coordinate executive medical assessments as required by company policy.
-
Provide first aid treatment and manage minor workplace injuries.

Respond to medical emergencies involving employees or customers.
-
Provide occupational health guidance to management and employees.
3. Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
-
Facilitate HIV/AIDS voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) initiatives.
-
Organize and support peer educator training and awareness programs.
-
Provide health support for employees with chronic or serious illnesses.
-
Refer employees to professional support organizations (clinics, NGOs, counselling services).
-
Respond to trauma incidents and arrange counselling services.
-
Promote workplace wellness initiatives aligned with health awareness programs.
4. Administration

Compile monthly Occupational Health Practitioner reports.
-
Support disability and medical benefit applications.
-
Coordinate medical appointments for employees.
-
Maintain accurate and confidential medical records.
-
Monitor health-related budget allocations and spending.
-
Schedule store visits and maintain documentation.
-
Assist with documentation related to public liability claims.
Minimum Requirements
-
Matric (Grade 12).
-
Professional Nursing Qualification.
-
Occupational Health Nursing qualification registered with South African Nursing Council (SANC).

Currently registered and in good standing with SANC.
-
Minimum 3 years’ experience in occupational health nursing.

Valid driver’s license.
