    Job Description

    The Control Immigration Officer: Inspectorate is responsible for enforcing South Africa’s immigration legislation by investigating illegal immigration, monitoring compliance with the Immigration Act, supervising law enforcement activities, coordinating deportations, supporting criminal investigations, and working with law enforcement agencies to combat illegal migration, human trafficking, and immigration-related crimes.

    The role also involves appearing in court, conducting inspections, preparing reports, maintaining stakeholder relationships, and ensuring the lawful implementation of departmental policies and procedures.

    Key Responsibilities

    Immigration Law Enforcement

    • Enforce the Immigration Act and related legislation.
    • Monitor compliance with immigration laws.
    • Investigate illegal immigration activities.
    • Detect and trace illegal foreigners.
    • Arrest and detain illegal foreigners in accordance with the law.
    • Conduct immigration inspections.

    Investigations

    • Investigate immigration transgressions.
    • Investigate migrant smuggling.
    • Investigate human trafficking cases.
    • Investigate fraudulent production of:
      • Birth certificates
      • Identity documents
      • Passports
      • Visas
      • Residence permits
      • Travel documents
    • Assist in investigating corruption-related immigration offences.
    • Support investigations involving high-profile cases.

    Deportation Management

    • Monitor deportation processes.
    • Coordinate lawful deportation of illegal foreigners.
    • Ensure deportations are conducted humanely and efficiently.
    • Promote voluntary departures where appropriate.

    Court & Legal Support

    • Appear in criminal and civil court proceedings.
    • Testify in court on behalf of the Department.
    • Participate in disciplinary hearings.
    • Prepare legal reports and supporting documentation.

    Border & Immigration Monitoring

    • Monitor the movement and influx of foreign nationals.
    • Verify legal immigration documentation.
    • Ensure compliance with permits and visas.
    • Identify undocumented foreign nationals.

    Law Enforcement Coordination

    • Liaise with:
      • South African Police Service
      • Other law enforcement agencies
      • Government departments
      • Security cluster stakeholders
    • Participate in crime prevention operations.
    • Attend security cluster forums.
    • Participate in case flow management meetings.

    Administration & Reporting

    • Prepare operational reports.
    • Compile statistical reports.
    • Maintain investigation records.
    • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.

    Vehicle & Equipment Management

    • Operate heavy-duty departmental vehicles.
    • Maintain departmental vehicles.
    • Safeguard departmental tools and equipment.

    Minimum Requirements

    Educational Requirements

    A SAQA-recognized NQF Level 6 qualification in one of the following:

    • Law
    • Public Management
    • Public Administration
    • Policing
    • Criminology
    • Forensics
    • Criminal Justice

    Experience

    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a law enforcement environment.

    Additional Requirements

    • Valid Code C1 or Code C (Code 10) driver’s licence.
    • Valid Public Driver Permit (PDP).
    • Willingness to travel, including outside South Africa.
    • Willingness to work extended hours.
