    Job Description

    The Assistant Director: Immigration Services Inspectorate is responsible for managing immigration inspectorate operations within the assigned office or district. The role focuses on enforcing immigration legislation, investigating immigration offences, managing compliance activities, supervising immigration officials, coordinating deportation processes, supporting court proceedings, and working closely with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to ensure effective immigration control.

    The successful candidate will provide operational leadership, oversee investigations, monitor compliance with legislation, manage resources, implement policies and procedures, and ensure effective service delivery in accordance with national legislation and departmental objectives.

    Key Responsibilities

    Immigration Operations Management

    • Manage Immigration Inspectorate operations within the assigned office or district.
    • Supervise daily immigration enforcement activities.
    • Ensure effective implementation of immigration policies and procedures.
    • Monitor operational performance and service delivery.

    Investigations & Compliance

    • Investigate violations of immigration legislation.
    • Review investigation reports and ensure quality assurance.
    • Take corrective action where investigation deficiencies are identified.
    • Monitor inspection and investigation statistics.
    • Analyse investigation trends and report findings.
    • Ensure compliance with the Immigration Act and related legislation.

    Legal Advice & Immigration Support

    • Provide advice and recommendations on immigration transgression cases.
    • Advise Office Managers, District Managers, and Provincial Managers on immigration matters.
    • Coordinate investigations relating to temporary and permanent residence permits.
    • Provide investigative support to Civic Services.

    Stakeholder & Law Enforcement Liaison

    • Represent the Department on Security Cluster forums.
    • Liaise with law enforcement agencies on immigration matters.
    • Work closely with Counter Corruption units on relevant investigations.
    • Coordinate with Central Law Enforcement on priority and high-profile cases.
    • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

    Deportation Management

    • Coordinate with Deportation Units.
    • Oversee the humane, lawful, and efficient deportation of illegal immigrants.
    • Monitor deportation processes and compliance.

    Court Case Management

    • Oversee immigration-related court cases.
    • Coordinate legal processes involving immigration matters.
    • Ensure proper preparation of documentation for court proceedings.

    Policy & Risk Management

    • Implement departmental policies, directives, legislation, and regulations.
    • Develop quality assurance strategies.
    • Ensure effective risk management.
    • Monitor legislative compliance.
    • Promote ethical governance and accountability.

    People & Resource Management

    • Supervise immigration officials.
    • Coach and mentor staff.
    • Promote compliance with legislation and departmental standards.
    • Manage allocated human, financial, and physical resources.
    • Monitor staff performance and development.

    Minimum Requirements

    Educational Requirements

    An undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 6, recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority) in one of the following:

    • Law
    • Public Management
    • Public Administration
    • LLB
    • Policing
    • Criminology
    • Forensics
    • Paralegal Studies
    • Criminal Justice

    Experience Requirements

    • Minimum 3 years’ supervisory experience in one of the following environments:
      • Law Enforcement
      • Legal Services
      • Security

    Additional Requirements

    • Valid Code B, C1, C, or EC1 driver’s licence.
    • Valid Public Driver Permit (PDP).
    • Willingness to travel, including outside South Africa when required.
    • Willingness to work extended hours.
