    Job Overview

    The Free State Department of Health is seeking a qualified Ultrasound Radiographer/Sonographer to provide professional diagnostic ultrasound services at Botshabelo District Hospital.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the operational management of the ultrasound department, providing diagnostic imaging and reporting, maintaining quality standards, managing stock and statistics, and ensuring compliance with healthcare legislation and departmental policies.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must have:

    • Grade 12 / Senior Certificate.
    • An appropriate qualification allowing registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Ultrasound Radiographer/Sonographer.
    • Current HPCSA registration for 2026/2027.

    Experience Requirements

    The salary grade will depend on relevant post-registration experience:

    Grade 1

    • No experience required after registration with HPCSA as an Independent Ultrasound Radiographer/Sonographer.

    Grade 2

    • Minimum of 10 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA as an Ultrasound Radiographer/Sonographer.

    Grade 3

    • Minimum of 20 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA as an Ultrasound Radiographer/Sonographer.

    Knowledge & Skills

    Candidates should have:

    • Good communication skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
    • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
    • Knowledge of ultrasound and sonography practices.
    • Ability to manage departmental operations.
    • Computer literacy will be an added advantage.

    Key Responsibilities

    Ultrasound Department Management

    • Manage the day-to-day operations of the ultrasound department.
    • Plan, organise and supervise the delivery of sonography services.
    • Ensure services align with the vision and mission of the Department of Health.
    • Provide professional advice on health-related policies and legislation.

    Diagnostic Imaging

    • Provide diagnostic ultrasound imaging and reporting.
    • Liaise with doctors regarding ultrasound requests and patient requirements.
    • Ensure appropriate and accurate ultrasound examinations are performed.
    • Maintain professional standards throughout the imaging and reporting process.

    Administration & Stock Control

    • Compile monthly statistics.
    • Manage and monitor stock levels.
    • Ensure appropriate utilisation and availability of ultrasound-related supplies and equipment.
    • Maintain accurate departmental records.

    Compliance & Quality Assurance

    • Ensure compliance with:
      • PFMA
      • National Core Standards
      • Departmental policies and regulations
      • Relevant healthcare legislation
    • Implement and maintain Quality Assurance equipment protocols.
    • Ensure ultrasound equipment is properly maintained and used according to prescribed standards.

    Health & Safety

    • Ensure safe working systems are maintained within the department.
    • Take appropriate measures to prevent workplace accidents.
    • Identify and reduce occupational health and safety hazards.
    • Promote a safe environment for patients and staff.

    Problem Solving & Patient Service

    • Address operational problems within the ultrasound department.
    • Handle and resolve complaints appropriately.
    • Promote effective communication with patients, doctors and other healthcare professionals.
