Job Overview
The Free State Department of Health is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Clinical Programme Coordinator: Infection Prevention Control (IPC) to coordinate and strengthen infection prevention and control services at Botshabelo District Hospital.
The successful candidate will monitor IPC compliance, conduct infection surveillance, coordinate research and training, investigate outbreaks, support policy implementation and work with management and healthcare teams to improve infection prevention practices.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have one of the following:
- A Basic R425 nursing qualification (Diploma/Degree in Nursing) or equivalent qualification allowing registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse; or
- A 4-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing (R174); or
- A 3-year Diploma in General Nursing (R171).
Applicants must also have:
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse.
- At least 7 years’ appropriate/recognisable nursing experience after registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing.
- Current SANC registration for 2026/2027.
- Infection Prevention and Control Nursing experience or a relevant qualification will be an advantage.

- Knowledge of IPC policies, procedures and healthcare infection-control practices.
Key Responsibilities
IPC Policy & Compliance
- Establish systems to monitor implementation of National Department of Health (NDoH) and Free State Department of Health (GDoH) IPC policies and guidelines.
- Facilitate the review and updating of existing IPC protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Promote compliance with infection prevention and control requirements.
Research, Surveillance & Monitoring
- Facilitate IPC research, surveillance, monitoring and evaluation.
- Conduct infection surveillance and routine data collection.
- Analyse IPC data and provide management with reports and recommendations for corrective action.
- Monitor the effectiveness of IPC programmes and interventions.
Infection & Outbreak Management
- Ensure that nosocomial infections and outbreaks are properly investigated and reported.
- Monitor implementation of quality-improvement strategies following infection outbreaks.
- Establish systems for early identification and isolation of confirmed and suspected infectious diseases.
Planning & Reporting
- Participate in Provincial and Cluster IPC Committee structures.
- Revive and support the institutional Infection Prevention and Control Committee.
- Contribute to the development of the IPC Strategic Plan.
- Develop an IPC Operational Plan aligned with the Free State Department of Health’s strategic objectives.
- Compile monthly, quarterly and annual IPC reports.
Resources & Stakeholder Support
- Monitor the availability of supplies required to support the IPC programme.
- Collaborate with managers to develop intervention strategies that improve IPC compliance.
- Support healthcare teams in implementing effective infection-control measures.
Training & Staff Management
- Provide IPC-related training to healthcare workers and relevant staff.
- Manage staff to ensure optimal departmental functioning.
- Promote awareness and adherence to infection prevention practices.
