Job Overview
The Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs is looking for experienced and customer-focused Resort Managers to oversee the effective management and operation of its tourism resorts.
The successful candidates will be responsible for financial management, resort facilities and infrastructure, hospitality services, marketing and commercialisation, staff supervision, asset management and general administration.
The role requires someone with strong tourism or hospitality management experience who can deliver excellent guest experiences while ensuring that the resort operates efficiently and in accordance with government policies and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree at NQF Level 7 in:
- Tourism;
- Hospitality; or
- Resort Management.
- 3–4 years’ experience in a Tourism, Hospitality or Resort Management environment.
- Computer literacy.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- Good understanding and knowledge of legislation, policies and prescripts governing tourism and resort management.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Ensure effective financial management of the resort.
- Maximise revenue collection.
- Appoint an official to assist with the collection and depositing of money when required.
- Ensure revenue collected is kept secure.
- Ensure money is deposited at the bank daily or whenever the amount exceeds R2,000, together with the Administrative Clerk.
- Reconcile money received daily.
- Ensure receipt books balance.
- Safeguard the keys to the money safe.
Resort Facilities and Maintenance
- Manage and maintain resort facilities effectively.
- Oversee infrastructure development and refurbishment.
- Ensure facilities provide a safe environment for visitors.
- Conduct regular inspections of resort facilities, including:
- Storerooms;
- Chalets;
- Camping sites;
- Swimming pools;
- Gardening and maintenance areas.
- Ensure chalet furniture and equipment are maintained and correctly recorded.
- Ensure chalet asset lists are updated timeously.
- Monitor grass cutting, campsite maintenance and swimming pool cleaning.
- Liaise with service providers when emergencies occur while following departmental SCM processes.
Resort Marketing and Commercialisation
- Implement the resort’s commercialisation strategy.
- Liaise with local municipalities and marketing associations to promote resort facilities.
- Participate in tourism exhibitions and industry events, including the Tourism Indaba in Durban and Gate-Away Show in Johannesburg.
- Promote resort facilities to potential customers and stakeholders.
- Participate in grading committee meetings.
- Conduct research and make recommendations regarding resort tariffs.
Hospitality and Guest Management
- Ensure effective hospitality management and a pleasant experience for guests.
- Attend to resort service bookings on arrival where necessary.
- Ensure chalets are properly prepared and prepaid before guests arrive.
- Check chalet inventories and cleanliness.
- Welcome guests and handle arrival formalities.
- Hand over keys and confirm payments.
- Respond to guest queries and complaints.
- Refer matters to relevant officials when necessary.
- Ensure customer complaints are resolved promptly.
- Develop customer satisfaction surveys.
- Use customer feedback to improve resort services and guest experiences.
Human Resource and Staff Management
- Supervise the human resources of the resort.
- Prepare and discuss monthly staff schedules.
- Ensure employees understand their duties and shift responsibilities.
- Plan, monitor and assess staff performance.
- Manage staff leave.
- Identify and coordinate training and development needs.
- Support personnel development.
- Apply appropriate disciplinary measures when required.
Asset and Fleet Management
- Manage and safeguard resort assets.
- Ensure pool vehicles are properly maintained and serviceable.
- Manage petrol cards and vehicle logbooks.
- Ensure trip authorities are completed and signed off.
- Monitor the use and condition of departmental resources.
Administration
- Perform and manage administrative and related functions.
- Maintain appropriate records and documentation.
- Ensure resort operations comply with departmental policies, procedures and applicable legislation.
