    Job Overview / Description

The University of the Free State (UFS) seeks qualified professionals to serve as Clinical Preceptors in Occupational Health Nursing. The role involves supervising, guiding, and assessing nursing students during their clinical placements in occupational health settings. The Clinical Preceptor will ensure students gain practical experience, apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts, develop competence in occupational health nursing practices, and learn the significance of evidence-based approaches in their future careers.

As a Clinical Preceptor, one will engage not only in the supervision of students but also in active participation in their learning process. This involves creating a safe learning environment that fosters questions and discussions, ensuring students feel comfortable to express concerns and seek guidance. The Clinical Preceptor will utilize various teaching methodologies to cater to different learning styles, as students may respond differently to traditional lectures compared to hands-on demonstrations or group discussions.

The role includes clinical teaching, assessment, mentoring, and acting as a link between the School of Nursing and clinical practice facilities. The Clinical Preceptor supports students’ clinical learning, evaluates their progress, and provides feedback to ensure high standards of nursing education.

    Key Responsibilities

    Clinical Teaching & Supervision

    • Orientate students in the skills laboratory and clinical facilities

    • Facilitate clinical teaching and learning

    • Provide continuous supervision and support during clinical placements

Continuous supervision during clinical placements is not just about oversight; it is also about mentorship. The Clinical Preceptor must actively engage with students, offering real-time feedback and encouragement. This ongoing interaction allows students to reflect on their performance and make necessary adjustments to their approach. For instance, if a student struggles with patient communication, the Clinical Preceptor can provide strategies and practice opportunities to improve these skills.

    • Monitor students’ clinical movements and keep records

    Assessment & Support

    • Participate in clinical assessment and remedial support

Engaging in clinical assessment is essential for ensuring the quality of nursing education. The Clinical Preceptor must develop assessment tools that are aligned with both educational standards and workplace requirements. This includes creating rubrics that clearly outline expectations and provide a framework for evaluating student performance. Additionally, conducting regular assessment meetings with students can help clarify learning objectives and foster a collaborative approach to their education.

    • Provide constructive feedback and coaching

    • Evaluate clinical learning experiences continuously

Furthermore, evaluating clinical learning experiences is vital for ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education. The Clinical Preceptor should encourage students to participate in evaluations of their experiences, as this can provide insights into the effectiveness of clinical placements and highlight areas for improvement. Implementing a feedback loop where students can share their thoughts will enhance the learning environment and contribute to the overall development of the nursing program.

    Administrative & Reporting

    • Maintain a portfolio of evidence of own work

Maintaining a portfolio of evidence is an essential practice for Clinical Preceptors. This not only documents their contributions and achievements but also showcases a commitment to professional development. The portfolio can include student feedback, assessment results, and evidence of continuous learning through workshops and conferences attended. This practice reinforces the importance of reflective practices in nursing education and serves as a model for students.

    • Participate in clinical evaluation and quality improvement

    Additional Duties
