    Job Overview

    Boitumelo Regional Hospital in Kroonstad is inviting suitably qualified and experienced professional nurses to apply for the position of Assistant Manager PNB4 Specialty – Critical Care Nursing: Trauma & Emergency.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating specialised nursing care within the Critical Care: Trauma and Emergency environment, while providing clinical leadership, staff supervision, training, resource management and support to the nursing service.

    Salary and Benefits

    R785,568 per annum

    The package includes:

    • 13th cheque.
    • Housing allowance.
    • Medical aid – optional, subject to the prescribed requirements.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Senior Certificate / Grade 12.
    • Basic R425 qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse; OR
    • A 4-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing (R174) that allows registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse.
    • A post-basic nursing qualification of at least 1 year, accredited by SANC in Critical Care: Trauma and Emergency.
    • Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse for 2026/2027.
    • At least 10 years’ appropriate/recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing.
    • At least 6 years of the required experience must be appropriate/recognisable experience in Critical Care: Trauma and Emergency after obtaining the 1-year post-basic qualification in the specialty.
    • At least 3 years of the required experience must be appropriate/recognisable experience at management level.

    • Thorough knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures.
    • Knowledge of nursing statutes and relevant legal frameworks.
    • Knowledge of the Nursing Act, Health Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Patient Rights Charter and Batho Pele principles.
    • Knowledge of HR policies, including the Skills Development Act, Public Service Regulations and Labour Relations Act.
    • Knowledge of disciplinary and grievance procedures.
    • Knowledge of the OSD for nurses.
    • Knowledge of Department of Health policies.
    • Strong planning, coordination and organisational skills.
    • Ability to manage staff, training and specialised nursing resources.
    • Commitment to professional, ethical and evidence-based nursing practice.

    Key Responsibilities

    Specialised Nursing Care

    • Coordinate optimal, holistic specialised nursing care within the Critical Care: Trauma and Emergency environment.
    • Ensure nursing care is delivered within prescribed professional, legal and institutional standards.
    • Provide effective support to the nursing service.
    • Participate in the overall functions of the specialised unit.

    Staff Management and Development

    • Plan and coordinate the orientation, induction and mentoring of nursing staff.
    • Coordinate orientation of other relevant staff.
    • Plan and facilitate training and learning opportunities for all nursing categories.
    • Promote on-the-job training and continuous professional development.
    • Evaluate staff work performance in accordance with the applicable staff management system.
    • Implement disciplinary and grievance procedures within the prescribed level of authority and refer matters to the Nurse Manager when required.
    • Maintain professional growth, ethical standards and self-development.
    • Act in the capacity of Nursing Manager when delegated.

    Staffing and Rostering

    • Participate in team-building activities and overall specialised unit functions.
    • Plan staff allocations and change lists.
    • Prepare day and night duty rosters.
    • Provide inputs for leave planning.
    • Make shift adjustments where necessary to ensure adequate nursing coverage.
    • Maintain accurate records and statistical information relating to staffing and training, including agency staff.

    Patient Information and Research

    • Complete and maintain accurate patient-related data.
    • Contribute to evidence-based research.
    • Promote practices based on current nursing evidence and standards.

    Medication and Emergency Equipment Control

    • Conduct daily emergency cart control.
    • Check the ward dispensary.
    • Exercise control functions to meet medical and legal obligations.
    • Conduct weekly scheduled-drug controls.
    • Monitor and control medication usage within the specialised unit.

    Equipment and Consumables Management

    • Assess the suitability of equipment and consumables for specialised areas.
    • Provide budget inputs relating to consumables and equipment for the financial year.
    • Order and monitor appropriate levels of consumables in accordance with applicable norms.
    • Ensure resources are available to support effective specialised nursing services.

    Policies and Standard Operating Procedures

    • Develop and ensure the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the institution.
    • Ensure nursing practices comply with applicable Department of Health policies, professional standards and legal requirements.

    Working Environment

    The position requires the successful candidate to provide leadership and specialised nursing support in a Critical Care: Trauma and Emergency environment. The role involves staff management, clinical oversight, training, emergency preparedness, medication control, resource management and administrative responsibilities.
