Tender Overview
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is seeking to appoint a qualified contractor for the supply, delivery, installation, and commissioning of four pressure-certified hydrogen storage vessels at designated weather offices across South Africa.
These vessels are critical for operational meteorological functions, including hydrogen supply systems used in weather balloon operations and other atmospheric monitoring processes.
Due to the hazardous nature of hydrogen and the regulatory framework governing pressure vessels, only contractors with CIDB grading 4ME or higher are eligible to submit bids.
Tender Description
The appointed contractor will be responsible for:
1. Supply
Manufacture or supply of four pressure-certified hydrogen storage vessels
Compliance with relevant pressure vessel and safety standards
Certification and inspection documentation
2. Delivery
Transport to four separate weather office locations
Safe handling in accordance with hazardous materials regulations
3. Installation
Mechanical installation of vessels
Integration with existing hydrogen systems
Compliance with mechanical and safety standards
Structural and foundation considerations where required
4. Commissioning
Pressure testing and safety verification
Operational testing
Certification of readiness
Handover documentation and compliance certificates
Technical Requirements
Bidders must demonstrate:
Valid CIDB 4ME grading or higher
Experience in pressure vessel supply and installation
Compliance with applicable pressure vessel regulations and SANS standards
Ability to provide pressure certification and inspection reports
Capability to work across multiple provinces
Adherence to occupational health and safety regulations
Skills & Experience Requirements
The successful bidder must have:
Proven experience with hydrogen or similar high-pressure gas systems
Qualified mechanical engineers and technicians
Knowledge of hazardous gas handling protocols
Experience in commissioning pressure systems
Strong safety management systems
Compliance with national safety and engineering standards
Objective of the Project
Ensure safe and compliant hydrogen storage infrastructure
Support SAWS operational weather monitoring activities
Upgrade and standardize hydrogen storage systems
Enhance safety and reliability at multiple national sites
