Job Overview
The Bookseller is responsible for delivering excellent customer service, supporting sales growth, and maintaining an attractive, well-organized store environment. The role combines retail sales, merchandising, stock handling, administration, and strong product knowledge, with a focus on building meaningful relationships with customers through a passion for books.
This position suits an energetic, customer-focused individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced retail environment, is physically fit, and is willing to work flexible hours, including weekends.
Job Description
Customer Service & Sales
Greet and assist every customer with a friendly, positive attitude
Understand customer needs and recommend suitable books and products
Upsell and cross-sell products, promotions, and alternatives
Build long-term customer relationships to drive repeat business
Book Knowledge & Product Expertise
Continuously build knowledge of books, authors, and genres
Source and order books for customers using store lookup systems
Recommend substitute or alternative titles when required
Merchandising & Store Presentation
Maintain attractive window and in-store displays
Change displays every two weeks in line with promotions
Ensure bestsellers are well-stocked and prominently displayed
Keep the store clean, tidy, and well-organized at all times
Stock Management & Control
Receive, unpack, and categorize stock and merchandise
Assist the Store Manager with shrinkage control
Ensure stock is correctly shelved and displayed
Security & Loss Prevention
Remain alert to non-shoppers and potential shoplifters
Support store security procedures
Administration & Cash Handling
Assist with cash-ups and credit card checks
Handle gift vouchers, supplier payouts, and shortage reports
Maintain attendance registers and assist with wage payouts
Manage email communication and general store administration
Qualifications & Experience Requirements
Matric (essential)
Retail or sales experience (preferred but not essential)
Relevant qualifications such as Marketing, English Literature, Communications, Journalism, or similar (advantageous)
High level of computer literacy
Physically strong and healthy
