Job Purpose
The Frontline Cashier is responsible for delivering efficient, friendly, and accurate checkout services to customers. The role ensures all customer transactions are processed correctly while maintaining excellent service standards and supporting the store’s professional image at the point of sale.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service and Checkout
Greet customers politely and assist them during checkout.
Scan items accurately and confirm correct pricing.
Process payments including cash, cards, vouchers, and loyalty points.
Pack customer purchases neatly and assist with bagging.
Inform customers about promotions, loyalty programmes, and special offers.
Handle customer questions or complaints professionally and escalate issues when necessary.
Cash Handling and Transactions
Balance the cash float and till at the beginning and end of each shift.
Process refunds, exchanges, and void transactions according to company policies.
Ensure accurate cashing-up with no discrepancies.
Safeguard cash, vouchers, and coupons according to store procedures.
Report errors, shortages, or suspicious activity immediately.
Product Scanning and Pricing
Scan products efficiently and ensure prices match shelf labels.
Report barcode or pricing issues to management.
Apply discounts, promotions, and loyalty rewards correctly.
Verify identification for age-restricted items when required.
Ensure correct weighing and pricing of fresh produce and bulk items.
Till Area Maintenance
Maintain a clean, organized checkout counter.
Ensure sufficient supplies of bags, till rolls, and cleaning materials.
Keep counters free of unnecessary items.
Follow store hygiene and presentation standards.
Sanitize the work area regularly during shifts.
Compliance and Security
Follow Pick n Pay’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and store policies.
Comply with BCEA and OHSA safety regulations.
Report suspicious transactions, counterfeit money, or theft immediately.
Follow procedures for cash drops, safe deposits, and void transactions.
Protect customer confidentiality and privacy.
Teamwork and Communication
Work cooperatively with colleagues during busy periods.
Communicate with supervisors, managers, and the cash office team.
Assist with opening and closing tills when required.
Attend team briefings and follow shift schedules.
Support other departments when requested by management.

Minimum Requirements
Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification
Ability to communicate effectively in English
Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays
Ability to stand for long periods during shifts
Experience in retail or cashier work is an advantage but not essential, as training may be provided.
