Job Purpose
The Frontline Cashier is responsible for delivering friendly, efficient, and accurate checkout service to customers. The role ensures that all purchases are processed correctly while maintaining high customer service standards and supporting Pick n Pay’s professional image at the point of sale.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service and Checkout
Greet customers politely and provide professional service.
Scan products accurately and confirm correct pricing.
Process payments including cash, debit/credit cards, vouchers, and loyalty points.
Pack customer purchases neatly and assist with bagging.
Inform customers about promotions, loyalty programmes, and special offers.
Handle customer queries or complaints and escalate issues when necessary.
Cash Handling and Transactions
Balance the cash float and till at the beginning and end of each shift.
Process refunds, exchanges, and void transactions according to store procedures.
Ensure accurate cashing-up with no discrepancies.
Safeguard cash, vouchers, and coupons according to company policies.
Report errors, shortages, or suspicious activity immediately.
Product Scanning and Pricing
Scan items efficiently and ensure prices match shelf labels.
Report barcode or pricing errors to management.
Apply promotions, discounts, and loyalty rewards correctly.
Verify identification for age-restricted items when required.
Ensure accurate weighing and pricing of fresh produce and bulk goods.
Till Area Maintenance
Maintain a clean, organized checkout counter.
Ensure sufficient supplies such as bags, till rolls, and cleaning materials.
Follow store hygiene and presentation standards.
Sanitize the workspace regularly during shifts.
Compliance and Security
Follow Pick n Pay’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.
Comply with BCEA and OHSA safety regulations.
Report suspicious transactions, counterfeit money, or theft immediately.
Follow procedures for cash drops, safe deposits, and void transactions.
Protect customer privacy and confidentiality.
Teamwork and Communication
Work cooperatively with colleagues during busy trading hours.
Communicate with supervisors, cash office staff, and managers.
Assist with opening or closing tills and float allocation when required.
Attend team briefings and follow assigned shift schedules.
Provide support to other departments when requested.

Minimum Requirements
Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification
Ability to communicate effectively in English
Ability to stand for extended periods
Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays
Previous retail or cashier experience is an advantage but not required, as training may be provided.
