This role focuses on managing and expanding a commercial insurance broker portfolio within the Heavy Haulage / HCV (Heavy Commercial Vehicle) insurance sector. The successful candidate will act as the primary liaison between brokers and internal teams (Underwriting, Claims, Finance), ensuring alignment with strategic objectives, compliance requirements, and profitability targets.
The position requires strong commercial acumen, underwriting expertise, relationship-building capability, and a thorough understanding of Heavy Haulage insurance products and market dynamics.
Job Description
Core Purpose
To achieve premium and profit objectives by building strong broker relationships and implementing creative marketing, underwriting, and risk management strategies that drive growth and retention.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio & Growth Management
Manage allocated portfolio growth, retention, and profitability.
Develop and agree on strategic growth plans.
Identify and pursue new sales and business development opportunities.
Prospect and onboard new brokers.
Participate in retention strategies.
Broker Relationship Management
Serve as the primary contact point for broker staff.
Build and strengthen long-term broker relationships.
Ensure brokers understand growth targets, mandates, compliance requirements, and product offerings.
Resolve broker and customer complaints and queries.
Sales & Market Development
Conduct market analysis including competitor research.
Provide strategic input on pricing, distribution, product, and promotional strategies.
Keep abreast of market trends, regulations, and competitor offerings.
Participate in industry forums and continuous learning initiatives.
Technical & Underwriting Leadership
Provide technical underwriting direction within assigned portfolio.
Support underwriting decisions on pricing, structure, and complex risk processing.
Ensure brokers operate within agreed mandates.
Contribute to product development initiatives.
Maintain strong knowledge of reinsurance principles.
Collaboration & Internal Alignment
Work closely with Underwriting, Claims, and Finance teams.
Ensure alignment of service standards and business processes.
Indirectly lead Service Consultants and Underwriters within portfolio cluster.
Ensure delivery against performance targets.
Training & Development
Provide ongoing product, process, and systems training to brokers.
Coordinate new and ongoing training initiatives.
Governance & Compliance
Ensure compliance with corporate governance policies and FAIS regulations.
Align brokers with business model and quality standards.
Monitor and report on performance against agreed KPIs.
Minimum Requirements
Matric (Grade 12)
FAIS accreditation (required)
RE 5 certification
NQF Level 5 qualification in Insurance or Risk Management
Minimum 3 years’ Commercial Insurance experience
HCV / Heavy Haulage insurance sales and underwriting experience
Experience visiting and engaging brokers in the field
