Job Purpose
The Part-Time Lecturer is responsible for delivering lectures in Hospitality Management and Tourism-related modules, supporting student learning, preparing and administering assessments, monitoring academic performance, and assisting students in achieving academic success.
The role involves teaching allocated modules, providing academic support to students, maintaining academic records, and contributing to the overall quality of teaching and learning at the institution.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Facilitation
- Present lectures according to module specifications and academic schedules.
- Deliver engaging and interactive learning experiences.
- Facilitate classroom discussions and practical learning activities.
- Ensure curriculum content is effectively covered within allocated timeframes.
Student Support and Development
- Identify students who may be academically at risk.
- Provide academic guidance and support.
- Assist students in understanding course material and assessment requirements.
- Monitor student participation and attendance.
Assessment Management
- Prepare students for assignments, tests, and examinations.
- Develop and administer assessments according to academic guidelines.
- Mark assessments and provide constructive feedback.
- Monitor assessment submissions and report concerns where necessary.
Learning Management System Administration
- Upload academic resources and learning materials.
- Maintain and update student information on digital learning platforms.
- Provide feedback and academic communication through the learning management system.
Academic Administration
- Track module progress using academic pacers.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance.
- Participate in faculty and academic meetings.
- Assist with academic quality assurance activities.
Academic Performance Monitoring
- Analyse student results and module performance.
- Identify trends affecting student success.
- Support interventions aimed at improving student outcomes.
- Assist Programme Coordinators in monitoring at-risk modules.
Professional Development
- Participate in academic development and training initiatives.
- Stay informed about developments in Hospitality, Tourism, and Higher Education.
- Contribute to improving teaching and learning practices.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- BTech in Hospitality Management.
- Postgraduate Qualification or Honours Degree in:
- Hospitality Management, or
- Tourism Management (including Hospitality-related subjects).
- Must possess a qualification at least one NQF level higher than the qualification being taught.
- Academic transcript must be submitted.
Experience
- 2 to 3 years of lecturing or formal tutoring experience.
- 1 to 3 years of industry experience in Hospitality or Tourism will be advantageous.
