Job Overview
The Free State Department of Health is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Operational Manager Nursing (Specialty) – PNB3: Intensive Nursing Science to join Bongani Regional Hospital.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and coordinating nursing services, ensuring quality patient care, supervising nursing staff and maintaining compliance with nursing legislation, professional standards and departmental policies.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Senior Certificate (Grade 12).
- A Basic R425 nursing qualification (Diploma/Degree in Nursing) or equivalent qualification allowing registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse; or
- A 4-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing (R174); or
- A 3-year Diploma in General Nursing (R171).
- A post-basic nursing qualification of at least 1 year, accredited by SANC, in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science.
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse for 2026/2027.
- At least 9 years’ appropriate/recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing.
- At least 5 years of the required experience must be in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, obtained after completing the 1-year post-basic specialty qualification.
- Computer literacy.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Apply nursing legislation and relevant legal and ethical practices to improve service delivery.
- Ensure that nursing practices within the unit comply with the relevant scope of practice and nursing standards.
- Promote and maintain high-quality nursing care.
- Provide effective supervision and support to the nursing team.
- Demonstrate an understanding of human-resource and financial policies and practices.
- Communicate effectively with patients, supervisors, healthcare professionals and junior colleagues.
- Prepare more complex reports when required.
- Participate as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure quality nursing care.
- Work effectively with people from diverse intellectual, cultural, racial and religious backgrounds.
- Manage own workload and time, as well as those of junior colleagues, to ensure effective nursing services.
- Promote, advocate for and facilitate appropriate treatment and care for patients.
- Ensure that the unit adheres to the Batho Pele principles.
- Develop and maintain professional networks to enhance service delivery.
- Use computer systems and technology to support effective service delivery.
