    Job Overview

    The First Line Processing Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations within the blood processing laboratory during an assigned shift. The role ensures that whole blood is received, inspected, processed into components, stored, and distributed according to strict quality, safety, and regulatory standards.

    The supervisor manages laboratory staff, ensures compliance with internal policies and national regulatory requirements, maintains accurate processing records, and oversees equipment maintenance. This position combines technical laboratory expertise, regulatory compliance, operational management, and leadership responsibilities.

    Core Responsibilities

    1. Laboratory Processing Oversight

    • Supervise receipt, inspection, and handling of whole blood.

    • Oversee processing of whole blood into components.

    • Ensure correct storage temperatures and handling procedures.

    • Prevent contamination, damage, or loss of blood products.

    2. Quality and Compliance Management

    • Ensure compliance with SOPs and regulatory standards.

    • Maintain complete and accurate processing records.

    • Monitor adherence to SANAS, ISO15189, and GMP requirements.

    • Support quality improvement initiatives.

    • Ensure alignment with HPCSA and relevant health legislation.

    3. Equipment & Systems Oversight

    • Ensure automated processing equipment is:

      • Maintained

      • Serviced

      • Calibrated

    • Keep accurate maintenance records.

    • Ensure systems competence and data accuracy.

    4. Leadership & Supervision

    • Direct supervision of employees during shift.

    • Train and assess trainee and laboratory assistant staff.

    • Sign off employees as competent.

    • Motivate staff to achieve operational objectives.

    • Manage conflict and promote teamwork.

    5. Operational & Financial Objectives

    • Ensure daily operational targets are achieved.

    • Manage resources efficiently.

    • Support financial objectives through proper stock and process control.

    Minimum Requirements

    Education

    • Registered Medical Technologist (Blood Transfusion)

    • Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

    Experience

    • Minimum 1 year Blood Transfusion experience

    Knowledge & Regulatory Understanding

    • ISO 15189

    • Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
