Job Overview
The Academic Programme Convener (Faculty of Humanities) is responsible for the effective management and delivery of Humanities programmes at the Bloemfontein campus, as well as overseeing all online offerings within the Faculty. This role combines academic leadership, operational management, and limited lecturing responsibilities, with the primary focus on managing academic delivery and lecturer performance.
The successful candidate will provide subject matter expertise, ensure alignment with academic governance structures, manage resources and budgets, and act as the first point of contact for student-related academic concerns. The role requires a seasoned higher education professional with strong leadership capability, academic credibility, and sound management skills.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Delivery and Operations
Ensure effective operational delivery of Humanities programmes at the Bloemfontein campus
Oversee and manage lecturer performance and academic delivery standards
Ensure alignment of the community of practice with the development hub
Provide subject matter expertise related to Humanities qualifications
Ensure compliance with qualification frameworks, academic policies, and governance structures
Lecturing
Fulfil lecturing duties as required and agreed
Maintain academic credibility through engagement in teaching and scholarship
Primary focus remains on managing academic delivery rather than full-time lecturing
Academic and Operational Management
Contribute to academic budgeting and financial planning
Manage ICA claims processing
Conduct operational planning, monitoring, control, and corrective actions
Compile reports and provide feedback to management
Act as the first point of contact for student complaints, escalations, and problem-solving
Leadership and People Management
Manage resourcing and capacity (staff and equipment)
Assist with talent acquisition, selection, and onboarding of academic staff
Drive individual performance management
Foster a positive academic culture, climate, and change management initiatives
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Relevant Master’s degree in Humanities or Social Sciences
Experience
Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a lecturer in higher education
At least 2 years’ management experience or demonstrated management potential
Academic journal publications (advantageous)
Functional and Technical Competencies
Advanced computer literacy, including MS Office
Working knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS)
