Job Overview
OFM is looking for a skilled Radio News Bulletin Compiler and Reader to join its newsroom in Bloemfontein. The successful candidate will be responsible for compiling, writing and presenting radio news bulletins in both Afrikaans and English, while ensuring that stories are accurate, relevant and suitable for a commercial radio audience.
Reporting to the News Editor, the successful candidate will contribute to the daily news agenda and may be required to lead the newsroom team when necessary.
Job Description
The role involves researching, sourcing, verifying, writing, editing and presenting news for OFM’s broadcast audience. The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-paced newsroom environment, meeting tight deadlines and making sound editorial decisions.
Candidates should have a strong understanding of current affairs and the communities within OFM’s broadcast footprint, including the Free State, North West, southern Gauteng and Northern Cape.
Responsibilities
- Compile and read radio news bulletins in Afrikaans and English.
- Write clear, engaging and accurate commercial radio news stories.
- Source, verify and prioritise news stories independently.
- Research current affairs and identify relevant stories for OFM’s audience.
- Set and contribute to the daily news agenda.
- Exercise sound editorial judgement when selecting and developing stories.
- Edit audio for broadcast purposes.
- Use newsroom and broadcasting software effectively.
- Work accurately under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Follow editorial direction from the News Editor.
- Work independently while contributing effectively to the newsroom team.
- Lead the team when required.
- Cover live and breaking-news situations when necessary.
- Ensure news content complies with applicable media law and broadcasting requirements.
Requirements
- Preferably a relevant degree or diploma in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies or a related field.
- Experience compiling and reading radio news bulletins, preferably within a live newsroom environment.
- Excellent written and spoken Afrikaans and English.
- Clear, confident and professional on-air delivery.
- Strong knowledge of current affairs.
- Good knowledge of OFM’s broadcast footprint.
- Excellent commercial radio news-writing skills.
- Strong editorial judgement.
- Ability to independently source, verify and prioritise stories.
- Experience with audio editing.
- Ability to use newsroom and broadcasting software.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and follow editorial direction.
- Ability to contribute to and lead the daily news agenda when required.
- Must reside in Bloemfontein or be willing to relocate.
Advantageous
