The Officer: Data Analyst will provide specialised support in structuring, managing, and analysing complex datasets for digital heritage, human language technology (HLT), and interdisciplinary research projects. The successful candidate will be involved in developing digital tools, deep learning applications, and frameworks for ethical data use. Key Responsibilities
-
Structure, curate, and manage social listening and digital heritage data using Omeka S.
-
Maintain and update ICDF project repositories on GitHub.

Provide data support across multiple digital backbone projects.
-
Develop Streamlit interfaces for HLT applications and annotation systems.
-
Conduct UX design experiments within the DSC framework.
-
Deploy and refine deep learning models for research and public use.
-
Extract and analyse data to track social media narratives (data mining).

Support academic outputs, including writing articles, book contributions, and project summaries.

Finalise data integration for the Forgotten Highway and Lebitso projects.

Ensure accuracy, ethical considerations, and accessibility in data management and sharing.
Qualifications (Inherent Requirements)

Bachelor’s or B-Tech degree (NQF Level 7) in Computer Science, plus either:

Another undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 7) in an interdisciplinary field, or
-
A postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8) in an interdisciplinary field.

At least two years of relevant experience in Data Science and IT.
Recommendations

Minimum of 3 years’ IT experience, including at least 6 months in data science and data engineering.

Dual-disciplinary background (e.g., Computer Science + Humanities/Natural Sciences).

Knowledge of interdisciplinary data science support.

Salary & Benefits

Annual remuneration package: R447,323.31 – R562,750.48 (depending on experience, qualifications, and budget availability).
