    National Director of Public Prosecutions(10-year term)

    • Location: South Africa (National Office of the National Prosecuting Authority)
    • Term of Appointment: Fixed, non-renewable 10-year term
    • Mandatory retirement upon reaching the age of 65

    • Remuneration: Determined by the President of the Republic of South Africa in accordance with Section 17(1) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act, 1998 (Act No. 32 of 1998).

    Job Purpose:

    To serve as the head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and provide strategic, ethical, and professional leadership in the execution of public prosecutions, ensuring justice, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law across the Republic of South Africa.

    Key Responsibilities:

    As outlined in Section 22 of the National Prosecuting Authority Act, 1998, the NDPP will:

    • Institute and conduct criminal prosecutions in any court in the Republic.

    • Issue and enforce prosecution policy directives across all NPA offices.

    • Intervene where there is non-compliance with directives or prosecutorial standards.

    • Review decisions to prosecute or not to prosecute, after consultation and stakeholder input.

    • Conduct or direct investigations related to the prosecution process as necessary.

    • Receive and manage reports from Directors on matters of prosecution.

    • Maintain strategic liaison with Deputy National Directors, Directors, prosecutors, and other legal institutions to ensure cooperation and consistency.

    • Prepare and submit comprehensive operational reports on the NPA’s performance and activities.

    Minimum Requirements:

    In terms of the National Prosecuting Authority Act, 1998, the candidate must:

    1.  Be a South African citizen

    2.  Hold legal qualifications entitling them to practise in all South African courts

    3.  Have at least 10 years’ executive management experience

    4.  Be a fit and proper person, demonstrating:

      • Legal and managerial experience

      • Conscientiousness

      • Integrity and ethical leadership
