Job Description
The Relief Blood Bank Technologist will perform routine testing functions within Blood Banks, including compatibility testing, post-natal testing and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for checking and verifying test results produced by Registered Blood Bank Technicians, Registered Trainee Technicians and Registered Student Technologists, while maintaining laboratory quality, safety and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Blood Bank Testing
- Perform routine Blood Bank testing procedures.
- Conduct compatibility testing.
- Perform post-natal investigations.
- Conduct preliminary transfusion reaction investigations.
- Check and verify test results performed by relevant laboratory personnel.
- Apply appropriate blood grouping and laboratory techniques.
Specialist Technical Functions
- Perform specialised Blood Bank technical functions.
- Apply appropriate laboratory procedures and standards.
- Ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Exercise appropriate professional judgement when interpreting results and identifying potential issues.
Quality and Risk Management
- Support quality objectives within the Blood Bank.
- Identify and manage laboratory-related risks.
- Maintain compliance with relevant laboratory and professional standards.
- Ensure attention to detail and accuracy in testing and result verification.
Instrument and Laboratory Maintenance
- Assist with the maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is used appropriately.
- Support the maintenance of an efficient and safe laboratory environment.

Minimum Requirements
- HPCSA registration as a Medical Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
- Experience required for HPCSA registration as a Medical Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
