    Requirements for the Post

    To qualify for this role, candidates must possess an MBChB degree, a qualification that enables registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.

    • Current registration with the HPCSA (Independent Practice) is essential.

    • For foreign-qualified applicants, a valid work permit and recognised registration with the HPCSA or a recognised Foreign Health Professions body are required.

    • While no experience is required after initial HPCSA registration, foreign-qualified candidates must have at least one year of relevant experience.

    Skills and Competencies Required

    Candidates must demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of Public Service legislation, policies, and procedures. Strong communication skills — including verbal, written, and medico-legal report writing — are crucial, alongside:

    • Sound interpersonal abilities

    • High levels of honesty and integrity

    • Proven commitment to excellent work ethics

    Additionally, applicants should have certification in ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support), and APLS (Advanced Paediatric Life Support).

    Key Responsibilities

    The appointed Medical Officer will play a vital role in strengthening the hospital’s clinical services. Duties will include:

    • Commuted overtime duties, which are compulsory and non-negotiable.

    • Outreach and support to other levels of healthcare within the Free State Province.

    • Reducing medical litigation through ethical and thorough clinical practices.

    • Ensuring compliance with governance standards as outlined by the Free State Department of Health (FSDoH), Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC), HPCSA, College of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA), and University of the Free State (UFS).

    • Participating in clinical audits, as well as monitoring and evaluating clinical indicators relevant to effectiveness and service quality.

    The Medical Officer will report directly to the Head of Department, Head of Clinical Unit, and the Medical Specialist in the Nuclear Medicine Department.
