Job Description
The Speech Therapist is responsible for providing evidence-based assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation services to patients with communication, swallowing, cognitive-linguistic, and speech disorders. Working as part of an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team, the successful candidate will develop individualized therapy plans that help patients regain communication skills, improve safe swallowing, and increase their independence and quality of life.
The role also involves prescribing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) solutions, educating caregivers, maintaining accurate clinical documentation, supporting discharge planning, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to deliver patient-centred rehabilitation services while maintaining high ethical and professional standards.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment
- Assess patients’ communication abilities.
- Evaluate swallowing (dysphagia) disorders.
- Assess cognitive-linguistic functioning.
- Evaluate speech and language impairments.
- Assess patients’ functional communication needs.
- Identify rehabilitation goals based on individual patient needs.
Therapy Planning & Intervention
- Develop individualized therapy plans.
- Implement evidence-based speech and language therapy interventions.
- Provide communication rehabilitation.
- Deliver swallowing and feeding therapy.
- Prescribe and implement Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solutions.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as required.
Patient & Caregiver Support
- Educate patients on therapy goals and techniques.
- Train caregivers on communication and feeding strategies.
- Provide guidance on safe swallowing practices.
- Support patients in improving independence and daily functioning.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in interdisciplinary case discussions.
- Contribute to patient-centred treatment planning.
- Assist with discharge planning and continuity of care.
Clinical Administration
- Maintain accurate patient records and clinical documentation.
- Complete therapy reports and treatment notes.
- Ensure accurate billing and administrative documentation.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Professional Practice
- Deliver ethical, evidence-based rehabilitation services.
- Comply with HPCSA standards and professional regulations.
- Participate in continuous professional development.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Speech-Language Therapy or Speech-Language Pathology (or equivalent recognized qualification).
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa Board for Speech, Language and Hearing Professions.
- Registered in the Independent Practice category as a Speech Therapist.
Experience Requirements
