Job Description
The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of the pharmacy dispensary and clinic while ensuring the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care and exceptional customer service. The role involves leading the pharmacy team, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance, managing financial and operational performance, and maintaining high standards of patient care.
The successful candidate will supervise dispensing activities, manage pharmacy stock and expenses, lead and develop employees, ensure compliance with the South African Pharmacy Council regulations, and work closely with store and clinic teams to provide a comprehensive healthcare service. The Pharmacy Manager also plays a key role in achieving sales targets, promoting customer loyalty, and supporting the company’s vision of being the customer’s first choice health and beauty retailer.
Key Responsibilities
Pharmaceutical Care
- Ensure the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care.
- Supervise accurate and safe dispensing of medication.
- Perform generic substitution where appropriate.
- Provide professional pharmaceutical advice and patient counselling.
- Ensure compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) standards.
- Operate within the legal scope of practice established by the SAPC.
- Promote patient safety and quality healthcare services.
Dispensary Operations
- Manage the daily operations of the dispensary.
- Oversee medication dispensing processes.
- Ensure proper administration and record keeping.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping within the dispensary.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and pharmacy regulations.
- Monitor operational efficiency and workflow.
Stock & Inventory Management
- Manage pharmacy stock effectively.
- Monitor stock levels and ordering.
- Prevent stock losses and shrinkage.
- Ensure safe storage of pharmaceutical products.
- Conduct inventory control and stock management activities.
- Maintain accurate stock records.
Financial Management
- Ensure the financial sustainability of the dispensary.
- Monitor dispensary and clinic performance against targets.
- Manage operational expenses.
- Control costs while maintaining service quality.
- Take corrective action where financial targets are not achieved.
- Contribute to sales growth and profitability.
Leadership & People Management
- Lead and supervise the pharmacy team.
- Recruit, develop, and retain competent employees.
- Manage pharmacists, pharmacy support staff, learners, and interns.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and ongoing training.
- Conduct performance management activities.
- Build a high-performing and motivated team.
Staff Scheduling & Administration
- Prepare staff schedules in accordance with labour policies.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels at all times.
- Manage employee attendance records.
- Submit required HR documentation accurately and on time.
- Ensure compliance with labour legislation and company procedures.
Customer Service
- Deliver outstanding customer service.
- Enhance the customer experience within the pharmacy.
- Build long-term customer relationships.
- Promote customer loyalty and ClubCard participation.
- Address customer enquiries and concerns professionally.
Clinic & Store Integration
- Foster collaboration between the pharmacy, clinic, and retail store.
- Ensure customers receive integrated healthcare solutions.
- Support healthcare promotions and wellness initiatives.
- Promote teamwork across all departments.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with SAPC regulations.
- Maintain ethical pharmacy practices.
- Monitor legal and regulatory compliance.
- Implement company policies and procedures.
- Minimize operational risks.
- Maintain accurate documentation for audits and inspections.
Qualifications
- Registered Pharmacist with the South African Pharmacy Council.
- Registered as a Responsible Pharmacist with SAPC.
Experience Requirements
Essential
- Minimum 2 years’ post-community service experience as a Pharmacist.
- Minimum 1 year of people management experience.
- Registration as a Responsible Pharmacist.
Desirable
- Retail pharmacy experience.
- Experience using the Unisolv pharmacy management system.
