    • Salary: R253,341 – R424,371 per annum
      • Salary grade and notch will be determined according to the Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) requirements and years of relevant experience.

    Job Purpose

    The Artisan Production (Bricklayer) is responsible for carrying out bricklaying and masonry work, constructing and maintaining buildings and structures according to approved specifications, training offenders in bricklaying skills, ensuring quality workmanship, preparing quotations and cost estimates, maintaining workshop administration, and supporting infrastructure maintenance within correctional facilities.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Building Construction and Bricklaying

    • Produce building designs according to approved specifications.
    • Lay bricks using appropriate materials and equipment.
    • Construct walls and other masonry structures.
    • Perform bricklaying work in accordance with recognised industry standards.
    • Ensure completed work complies with project requirements.

    2. Maintenance and Repairs

    • Perform bricklaying maintenance services on departmental buildings.
    • Repair damaged masonry structures.
    • Maintain building infrastructure.
    • Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance.

    3. Equipment Inspection and Maintenance

    • Inspect bricklaying equipment and tools for technical faults.
    • Repair equipment where required.
    • Ensure equipment remains safe and operational.
    • Maintain workshop tools and machinery.

    4. Work Scheduling

    • Apply bricklaying activities according to approved work schedules.
    • Complete projects within specified timeframes.
    • Ensure work is carried out efficiently and professionally.

    5. Training and Skills Development

    • Train offenders in bricklaying and masonry skills.
    • Provide practical trade instruction.
    • Mentor and supervise apprentices or trainees.
    • Monitor learner progress and competency development.

    6. Production Services

    • Execute work according to client requisitions and work orders.
    • Manufacture and complete projects according to specifications.
    • Deliver quality workmanship that meets departmental standards.

    7. Quality Control

    • Inspect completed work.
    • Apply quality control measures throughout construction activities.
    • Ensure compliance with recognised construction standards.
    • Rectify defects where necessary.

    8. Costing and Quotations

    • Prepare cost estimates for building projects.
    • Compile quotations for materials and supplies.
    • Assist with pricing calculations.
    • Promote cost-effective use of departmental resources.

    9. Workshop Administration

    • Perform basic workshop administrative duties.
    • Maintain project and maintenance records.
    • Prepare technical reports.
    • Record completed work and resource usage.
    • Ensure accurate documentation of workshop activities.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must have:

    • An appropriate Trade Test Certificate (Bricklaying) underwritten by the Manpower Training Act (Red Seal).
    • A valid driver’s licence.
