- Salary: R253,341 – R424,371 per annum
- Salary grade and notch will be determined according to the Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) requirements and years of relevant experience.
Job Purpose
The Artisan Production (Carpenter) is responsible for performing carpentry and woodworking services, manufacturing and repairing wooden structures and furniture, maintaining workshop operations, training offenders and apprentices, ensuring quality workmanship, preparing quotations and cost estimates, and managing workshop resources within correctional facilities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Carpentry and Woodworking
- Perform carpentry work according to approved requisitions and work orders.
- Manufacture wooden furniture, fixtures, and fittings.
- Repair and maintain wooden structures and equipment.
- Install carpentry products where required.
- Perform preventative and corrective carpentry maintenance.
- Ensure work complies with departmental standards.
2. Production Services
- Execute work according to client requisitions and orders.
- Manufacture products that meet required specifications.
- Complete work within agreed timelines.
- Support efficient workshop production.
3. Quality Control
- Inspect completed carpentry products.
- Apply quality control procedures to manufactured items.
- Ensure workmanship complies with technical standards.
- Rectify defects where necessary.
4. Costing and Quotations
- Prepare product cost estimates.
- Compile quotations for materials and supplies.
- Assist with pricing calculations.
- Promote efficient use of workshop resources.
5. Workshop Administration
- Perform basic workshop administrative duties.
- Maintain production and maintenance records.
- Prepare technical reports.
- Record completed work.
- Maintain accurate workshop documentation.
6. Training and Skills Development
- Train offenders in carpentry trade skills.
- Supervise and mentor apprentices.
- Support workplace skills development programmes.
- Monitor learner progress and competency.
7. Carpentry Maintenance Services
- Perform routine maintenance on wooden structures.
- Repair doors, windows, cupboards, furniture, and other wooden fittings.
- Ensure departmental facilities remain functional and safe.
- Respond to maintenance requests.
8. Resource Management
- Manage carpentry tools and workshop equipment.
- Monitor the use of timber, hardware, and materials.
- Ensure efficient utilisation of departmental resources.
- Maintain workshop equipment in good working order.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- An appropriate Trade Test Certificate (Carpentry) underwritten by the Manpower Training Act (Red Seal).
- A valid driver’s licence.
