Job Description
The Sports Facilitator is responsible for planning and facilitating sports and recreational rehabilitation programmes within a correctional environment.
The role uses sports as a rehabilitation tool to promote:
- Discipline
- Teamwork
- Life skills
- Positive behaviour change
- Reintegration of offenders into society
The position also includes managing sports facilities, ensuring safety during activities, and supporting offender rehabilitation programmes.
Responsibilities
1. Sports & Recreation Programme Development
- Develop annual and weekly sports activity plans
- Align sports programmes with offender rehabilitation goals
- Facilitate:
- Coaching
- Fitness drills
- Conditioning sessions
- Sports skills development
Sports codes may include:
- Soccer
- Rugby
- Netball
- Athletics
- Volleyball
2. Offender Rehabilitation Support
- Integrate life skills, discipline, teamwork, and respect into activities
- Encourage pro-social behaviour and fair play
- Support conflict resolution through sport participation
- Adapt activities for:
- Different age groups
- Risk categories
- Medical needs
- Disabilities and special needs
3. Participation Monitoring
- Recruit and register offenders into sports programmes
- Monitor participation and progress
- Record behavioural and rehabilitation outcomes
- Align activities with offender case management plans
4. Collaboration & Stakeholder Support
- Work with:
- Psychologists
- Social workers
- Educators
- Case Management Committees (CMCs)
- Support offender rehabilitation and reintegration planning
5. Events & Tournament Coordination
- Organise:
- Internal leagues
- Tournaments
- Wellness days
- Inter-centre sports fixtures
- Coordinate logistics including:
- Venues
- Equipment
- Officials
- First aid
- Refreshments
6. Safety & Security Compliance
- Ensure all activities follow:
- Security procedures
- Safety regulations
- Crowd management protocols
- Conduct safety briefings and risk assessments
- Ensure injury prevention measures are followed
7. Facility & Equipment Management
- Inspect and maintain:
- Sports fields
- Courts
- Gym facilities
- Manage equipment issuing and returns
- Maintain asset registers and tool control systems
8. Incident & First Aid Management
- Coordinate first aid response when required
- Manage injury and incident reporting
- Promote safe participation practices
9. Administrative Duties
- Compile reports and participation statistics
- Manage resources including:
- Human resources
- Finances
- Assets
Requirements
Educational Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / Matric
AND either:
- Relevant NQF Level 6 qualification in:
- Sport Management Sciences
- Behavioural Sciences
PLUS:
- Successful completion of:
- Correctional Science Learnership OR
- Basic Training Programme
Experience Requirements
Candidates without qualification
- 10 years relevant experience at CB1 level required
Candidates with NQF Level 6 qualification
- No previous experience required
Added Advantages
- Recognised coaching accreditation in at least one sports code
- Valid driver’s licence
