Job Description
The Librarian is responsible for managing and promoting prison library services within a correctional centre. The role supports offender rehabilitation and education by providing access to learning materials, educational resources, and library programmes.
The position combines library management with correctional environment responsibilities, ensuring secure and effective access to educational and informational resources.
Responsibilities
1. Library Management
- Supervise prison library services
- Manage daily library operations
- Maintain administrative control systems for library materials
- Monitor issuing and receiving of books and periodicals
2. Educational & Rehabilitation Support
- Facilitate library education programmes for offenders
- Promote reading and learning within the correctional centre
- Support offender rehabilitation through educational access
- Assist students and offenders with academic research and study materials
3. Information & Research Assistance
- Advise readers on effective use of library resources
- Help students source information and documentation
- Arrange inter-library loans for students
- Support access to intellectual materials including:
- Books
- Journals
- Videos
- Audio materials
4. Library Resource Administration
- Obtain and order new books and periodicals
- Return library materials to provincial libraries
- Maintain records of library stock and resources
- Ensure proper control of learning materials
5. Resource & Security Management
- Manage library assets and resources
- Ensure compliance with correctional security procedures
- Maintain safe and secure library operations within the correctional environment
Requirements
Educational Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / Matric
AND either:
- Relevant NQF Level 6 qualification in:
- Library and Information Sciences
- Behavioural Sciences
PLUS:
- Successful completion of:
- Correctional Science Learnership OR
- Basic Training Programme
Experience Requirements
Candidates without qualification
- 10 years relevant experience at CB1 level required
Candidates with NQF Level 6 qualification
- No previous experience required
Additional Requirements
