Job Description
The Security Officer is responsible for maintaining security, safety, and control within correctional facilities. The role involves supervising inmates, managing access control, conducting security inspections, and ensuring safe and humane detention conditions.
The position also contributes to the rehabilitation and correction of offenders within the correctional system.
Responsibilities
1. Access Control & Security
- Perform access control at correctional centres
- Control entry and exit of officials, visitors, and inmates
- Monitor movement between different correctional areas
2. Inmate Supervision
- Supervise inmate movement inside and outside the correctional facility
- Escort and guard inmates at:
- Courts
- Hospitals
- Public institutions
- Ensure safe custody of offenders
3. Security Operations
- Conduct physical security inspections
- Operate and monitor security control rooms
- Ensure compliance with correctional security procedures
4. Equipment & Store Control
- Control and safeguard:
- Security equipment
- Firearms
- Correctional stores
- Monitor use and maintenance of security resources
5. Safety & Rehabilitation Support
- Promote safe and humane detention conditions
- Support offender rehabilitation and human development
- Ensure correctional standards are maintained
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Successful completion of:
- Correctional Science Learnership OR
- Basic Training Programme
Experience Requirements
CB1-1
- No previous experience required
CB1-2
- 10 years relevant experience at CB1-1 level
CB1-3
- 10 years relevant experience at CB1-2 level
Knowledge Requirements
- Correctional Services legislation and procedures
- Minimum Security Standards for correctional centres
- Security operations and access control procedures
- Firearm handling and security compliance
