Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM), a leading manufacturer in the weapons and ammunition sector, is seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Explosives Manager. This senior role is responsible for overseeing all explosives safety, regulatory compliance, and operational integrity at the Wellington site. The position acts as the legally appointed explosives authority for the site and plays a critical role in maintaining explosive area compliance, ensuring safe handling, movement, storage, and destruction of explosives.
This is a high-responsibility leadership role suited for an individual with deep technical knowledge of explosives and ordnance, strong decision-making abilities, and a proven background in managing explosives safety in manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities
Explosives Safety & Compliance

Develop, implement, and continuously improve explosives safety policies and procedures.

Foster a strong explosives safety culture across the Wellington site.

Serve as the primary contact for all explosives-related safety matters.

Act as the legal appointee responsible for explosive area compliance, zoning, segregation, and operational safety.
Regulatory & External Liaison

Liaise with regulatory authorities regarding explosives incidents and compliance matters.

Represent RDM at NIXT, SAFEX, SANAS activities and coordinate related training or events.

Appraise and implement new explosives safety regulations across relevant RDM sites.
Operational Oversight

Review and approve manufacturing and product documentation.

Oversee movement of explosives between sites and management of explosive magazines and burning grounds.

Manage and control explosive waste destruction.
Incident & Audit Management

Review accident and incident reports, offering technical expertise for investigations.

Ensure corrective actions are implemented for explosives-related incidents.

Conduct audits and inspections focused on explosives compliance and safety.
Training & Development

Work with the RDM Wellington Academy to align training with legislative and regulatory standards.

Facilitate explosives-related training and professional development across the site.
Quality & SHE Compliance

Ensure adherence to ISO standards related to Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, and Energy.

Support the organisation’s policies and procedures to maintain operational excellence.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Mandatory Explosives Qualifications

Completion of UNISA SLP-1 to SLP-4 modules:
PIIE01P, PIIE04S, PPSE01B, PPSE02C, PPSE05F, PPSE07H, PCPL03F, PCPL04G, PCPL05H, PCPL07K, PCPL08L, PETE01J, PETE03L, PERE04M, PETE08R
Education & Technical Requirements

Engineering degree (Mechanical, Chemical, or relevant field).

Proven training and experience in ordnance manufacturing, testing, storage, or usage.

Minimum 5 years’ experience working with explosives, ammunition, or ordnance systems.
Skills & Competencies

Strong decision-making and self-discipline.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Knowledge of SHE/OHS/Quality systems (advantageous).

Proficiency in MS Office and strong presentation skills.

Valid driver’s licence.
