Salary
- Grade 3: R348,636 – R390,396 per annum
- Grade 4: R413,199 – R472,449 per annum

Job Description
The EMS Shift Leader will provide supervisory and operational leadership during assigned Emergency Medical Services shifts at the Bothaville and Ventersburg Stations.
The successful candidate will supervise EMS personnel, manage resources and emergency vehicles, ensure compliance with HPCSA policies and operational protocols, and provide effective prehospital emergency medical care when required.
The role also involves responding to mass casualty incidents and disasters, managing complaints, conducting investigations, preparing reports and ensuring that personnel and equipment are properly managed throughout each shift.
Responsibilities
Shift Supervision and Operations
- Provide ongoing supervision of operational activities in line with HPCSA policies.
- Ensure compliance with applicable EMS policies, procedures and protocols.
- Implement operational plans at shift level.
- Supervise and manage rostered shifts and personnel.
- Ensure effective prehospital emergency medical care and response to incidents.
- Provide leadership and advice during emergency situations.
Emergency and Disaster Response
- Respond to mass casualty incidents and disaster scenes.
- Provide advice and leadership during major incidents.
- Attend to emergency incidents when required.
- Ensure effective coordination and response during emergency situations.
Resource and Equipment Management
- Manage all resources allocated to the shift efficiently.
- Monitor the use of resources.
- Report deviations, deficiencies and shortages.
- Supervise the maintenance of emergency vehicles and equipment.
- Ensure vehicles and equipment are managed according to Financial and Fleet directives.
- Assist with loss and theft control.
Human Resource Management
- Perform supervisory Human Resource Management functions.
- Facilitate ongoing personnel administration.
- Manage rostered shifts and personnel.
- Conduct Performance Management and Development System assessments.
- Support staff development and performance management.
- Provide administrative support to the Supervisor when required.
Complaints and Investigations
- Manage complaints received from internal and external sources.
- Conduct investigations when required.
- Compile reports relating to complaints and investigations.
- Ensure appropriate follow-up and reporting.
Reporting and Administration
- Prepare accident and incident reports.
- Compile reports relating to loss, theft and safety incidents.
- Ensure accurate and effective report writing.
- Maintain appropriate administrative records.
- Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and protocols.
Communication
- Maintain effective communication with:
- Patients
- Colleagues
- Other emergency services
- Members of the public
- Provide clear and accurate information during emergency and operational situations.
Requirements
Grade 3
- Successful completion of an Intermediate Life Support (ILS) qualification.
- Qualification must allow registration with the HPCSA as an Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA).
Grade 4
- Successful completion of an Emergency Care Technician (ECT) qualification.
- Qualification must allow registration with the HPCSA as an Emergency Care Technician (ECT).
Grade 5
- Successful completion of a Critical Care Assistant (CCA) course or National Diploma.
- Qualification must allow registration with the HPCSA as a Paramedic.
Grade 6
- Successful completion of a B-Tech Degree.
- Qualification must allow registration with the HPCSA as an Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP).
Additional Requirements
Applicants must also have:
- Valid Code C1 driver’s licence.
- Current Professional Driver’s Permit (P/G).
- Current registration with the HPCSA as an AEA, ECT, Paramedic or ECP, depending on the applicable grade.
- Knowledge of Supply Chain Management policy and Financial Management.
- Knowledge of Labour Relations.
- Computer literacy.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Good written, verbal and presentation skills.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and for extended hours.
- Willingness to travel.
- Willingness to attend to emergencies after hours.
