Job Description
The Professional Nurse General will provide comprehensive, holistic and quality nursing care to patients at Universitas Academic Hospital.
The successful candidates will be responsible for delivering nursing care in accordance with professional standards, applicable legislation and healthcare policies. The role also requires effective management of resources, participation in risk management, accurate record-keeping and maintaining professional development.
Responsibilities
- Provide optimal and holistic nursing care to patients.
- Ensure nursing care complies with prescribed norms and standards.
- Adhere to applicable professional and legal frameworks.
- Effectively utilise human resources, consumables and assets.
- Manage available resources within the allocated budget.
- Follow Supply Chain Management requirements when managing resources.
- Implement the Free State Department of Health risk management strategy.
- Contribute to reducing service-delivery complaints and potential litigation.
- Use relevant electronic data systems and manual source documents.
- Record, capture and reconcile relevant information accurately.
- Manage the flow of information and communication within the area of responsibility.
- Maintain professional growth and ethical standards.
- Participate in self-development in line with the Nursing Education Framework.
- Maintain excellent clinical competencies and nursing skills.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and other healthcare professionals.
Requirements
Applicants must have a Basic Nursing qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse.
Acceptable qualifications include:
- Basic R425 qualification (Diploma/Degree in Nursing) allowing registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse.
- 4-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing (R174) allowing registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse.
- 3-year Diploma in General Nursing (R171) allowing registration with SANC as a General Nurse.
Professional Registration
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) for 2026/2027.
- Registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse.
Experience Requirements
Grade 1:
- No experience required.
Grade 2:
- Minimum of 10 years’ appropriate/recognisable nursing experience after registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing.
Grade 3:
- Minimum of 20 years’ appropriate/recognisable nursing experience after registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing.
Knowledge and Skills
Candidates should have:
- Excellent and current clinical competencies.
- Strong nursing and patient-care skills.
- Good organisational skills.
- Good collaborative and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Honesty and integrity.
- High work ethics.
