Job Purpose
The Casual Cashier is responsible for providing excellent customer service at the point of sale by accurately processing customer transactions, handling payments securely, maintaining cash control, and ensuring compliance with Dis-Chem’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The role contributes to creating a positive shopping experience while minimising financial risk and preventing fraud.
Key Responsibilities
1. Customer Service
- Deliver excellent customer service at all times.
- Build professional relationships with customers.
- Handle customer enquiries courteously and efficiently.
- Report customer complaints and compliments to the Frontline Supervisor or Store Management.
- Apply Dis-Chem’s 5-Star Communication Principles.
2. Point-of-Sale Operations
- Operate the cash register accurately.
- Process customer purchases efficiently.
- Scan all merchandise correctly.
- Ensure all items are paid for before customers leave the store.
- Meet customer transaction turnaround targets.
3. Payment Processing
- Receive and process payments using:
- Cash
- Bank cards
- Vouchers
- Coupons
- Other approved payment methods
- Process refunds and exchanges when authorised.
- Handle loyalty programme transactions accurately.
4. Loyalty Programme Administration
Process loyalty transactions for:
- Discovery Health Care
- Medihelp Lifestage
- Momentum Multiply
- Legacy Lifestyle
- ABSA Rewards
- eBucks
5. Cash Handling
- Maintain accurate cash balances.
- Safeguard cash at all times.
- Deposit cash into the drop safe according to company procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding daily takings.
- Ensure cash drawer accuracy.
6. Security and Fraud Prevention
- Follow all Dis-Chem security procedures.
- Protect cashier login codes and passwords.
- Monitor suspicious customer behaviour.
- Report suspected fraud or theft to management.
- Ensure supervisor approval for:
- Line voids
- Price changes
- Authorised returns
7. Sales Support
- Stay informed about current promotions and special offers.
- Assist customers with product-related enquiries.
- Promote efficient checkout operations.
8. Compliance
- Follow all company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Comply with Dis-Chem policies.
- Ensure customers and colleagues are not exposed to unnecessary risks.
- Maintain accuracy in all transactions.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- At least 6 months’ cashier or till operations experience.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
- Sound numerical skills.
- Strong command of the English language.
- Basic customer service skills.
- Willingness to work retail hours.
