Job Overview
The Back End Developer will design, develop and maintain server-side applications, APIs and databases that support front-end applications. The role primarily uses the .NET ecosystem and involves working closely with business representatives, analysts, front-end developers, integration developers and QA engineers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering secure, scalable and high-performing solutions while contributing to the full software development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain server-side applications using C# and .NET Core/.NET Framework.
- Build and consume RESTful APIs and, where applicable, GraphQL.
- Develop secure, scalable and high-performance services.
- Design database schemas and optimise queries using SQL Server and other databases.
- Implement authentication, authorisation and data security practices.
- Write unit and integration tests.
- Participate in code reviews and maintain technical documentation.
- Collaborate with front-end developers to integrate APIs with client-facing applications.
- Participate in design, coding, testing, deployment and monitoring.
- Monitor application performance and troubleshoot production issues.
- Use DevOps repositories and deployment pipelines.
- Translate business requirements into appropriate technical solutions.
- Demonstrate completed solutions to business stakeholders.
- Keep up to date with emerging back-end development technologies and best practices.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric.
- IT Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
- Equivalent practical experience may be considered.
- 5+ years’ experience in back-end development.
- Ability to communicate in English and/or Afrikaans.
- Other languages will be advantageous.
Technical Skills
- Strong proficiency in C#.
- Strong knowledge of .NET Core / .NET Framework.
- Experience with Entity Framework / EF Core or similar ORM tools.
- Strong SQL Server knowledge, including queries, stored procedures and optimisation.
- RESTful API design and integration.
- Asynchronous programming, multithreading and concurrency in .NET.
- DevOps and Git/version control experience.
- Understanding of SOLID principles, OOP and layered architecture.
- Experience with jQuery, Bootstrap and related technologies.

Work Arrangement
The preferred location is on-site at the VKB Head Office in Reitz, Free State. A hybrid arrangement may be considered depending on experience. Applicants must be residents of South Africa.
