Job Description
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting occupational medicine audits, inspections and investigations within mining and industrial environments. The role focuses on medical surveillance, occupational diseases, health risks and compliance with applicable legislation and regulations.
The Inspector will investigate complaints and contraventions, monitor disease trends, provide technical input on mining and development-related applications, and contribute to the development and revision of occupational medicine regulations, guidelines and standards.
Responsibilities
- Conduct and report on underground and surface audits and inspections relating to medical surveillance and other occupational medicine matters.
- Take appropriate enforcement action where necessary.
- Ensure the investigation and reporting of mine-related diseases, contraventions and complaints.
- Analyse regional occupational disease trends to identify high-risk mining operations.
- Take appropriate action in response to identified occupational health risks.
- Investigate, consult and provide input on:
- Mine closures.
- Prospecting rights.
- Mining rights and permits.
- EMPSs.
- Township development.
- Provide input into regional reports.
- Contribute to the revision of medical regulations, guidelines and standards.
- Provide input on applications for exemptions, permissions and approvals related to occupational medicine.
- Monitor compliance with occupational health and medical requirements in mining and industrial environments.
Requirements
- An appropriate Bachelor of Nursing Science (B Cur) or National Diploma / B Tech in Occupational Health Nursing at NQF Level 6.
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- A minimum of three years’ experience in Occupational Medicine/Occupational Health.
- Valid driver’s licence.
Knowledge
The successful candidate should have:
- Sound knowledge of occupational medicine and nursing disciplines.
- Understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), regulations and directives.
- Understanding of general mining practices.
- Knowledge of occupational health risks associated with mining.
- Knowledge of the petrochemical industry.
- Knowledge of diving and related equipment.
- Knowledge of offshore oil exploration and diving environments.
