Job Summary
The Production Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all feed manufacturing processes to ensure products are produced efficiently, safely, cost-effectively, and according to quality standards. The role oversees the entire feed production cycle, including intake, storage, grinding, batching, mixing, pelleting, stock control, dispatch, equipment efficiency, and workforce management.
Key Responsibilities
Production Planning and Operations
- Allocate production schedules and adjust plans according to feed orders.
- Receive and process new feed orders.
- Ensure adequate raw material availability.
- Maintain sufficient finished feed stock levels.
- Monitor production processes and equipment performance.
- Coordinate inbound and outbound logistics.
Quality Control
- Ensure pellet and feed quality meet specifications.
- Supervise production line checks.
- Maintain critical control points.
- Implement and monitor feed safety standards.
- Compare batch reports against formulation requirements and investigate deviations.
Plant and Equipment Management
- Participate in planned maintenance activities.
- Monitor equipment efficiency daily, weekly, and monthly.
- Report machinery and equipment failures.
- Implement corrective actions to address production deviations.
- Improve plant performance and operational efficiency.
Stock Control and Inventory Management
- Monitor stock levels throughout the plant.
- Ensure proper storage and stacking procedures.
- Manage raw material and final product flushing systems.
- Control waste generation and sweepings.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSH Act)
- Basic Conditions of Employment Act
- ISO Standards

- Ensure employees use PPE correctly.
- Promote workplace safety and compliance.
Staff Management
- Supervise and discipline employees where necessary.
- Improve workforce utilization and productivity.
- Manage overtime and leave schedules.
- Ensure job descriptions are current and followed.
- Participate in recruitment processes.
- Train and retrain employees on SOPs and operational procedures.
- Identify training needs and coordinate development initiatives.
Financial and Administrative Management
- Participate in annual production and training budgeting.
- Control monthly expenses.
- Analyse milling and production costs.
- Review and sign off production reports.
- Maintain accurate records and files.
Communication and Reporting
- Communicate production statistics to staff.
- Report production backlogs and equipment failures to senior management.
- Ensure effective communication between departments.
- Maintain professional communication with customers and suppliers.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- National Diploma in Production.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an animal feed manufacturing environment.
- Minimum 2 years’ management experience in an FMCG environment.
