Job Description
The HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, implementing safety policies and procedures, identifying workplace hazards, conducting risk assessments, and promoting a safe working environment within mining and aggregate operations. The role focuses on protecting employees, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting continuous improvement in safety performance.
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety Management
- Promote the health, safety, and well-being of employees.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Monitor compliance with health and safety regulations and company standards.
- Drive achievement of Health and Safety goals and objectives.
Risk Management
- Identify workplace hazards and risks.
- Conduct HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) processes.
- Implement control measures to eliminate or reduce risks.
- Monitor effectiveness of risk mitigation measures.
Inspections, Audits and Investigations
- Conduct safety inspections and workplace audits.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses.
- Compile investigation reports and recommend corrective actions.
- Monitor implementation of corrective and preventative measures.
Compliance and Reporting
- Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
- Maintain health and safety records and documentation.
- Prepare reports for management and regulatory authorities.
- Support SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) compliance initiatives.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
- Foster positive relationships with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).
- Support communication and awareness of safety requirements across operations.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric).
AND/OR
- Safety Qualification such as:
- COMSOC 1
- COMSOC 2
- Related Health and Safety qualification
Advantageous
- Registration with a South African professional Health and Safety institution.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a SHEQ environment.
- Extensive knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Extensive experience within the mining industry, specifically open-cast mining.
Technical Requirements
