Job Description
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, servicing, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of diesel-powered vehicles, machinery, and equipment. The role ensures that all machinery operates safely and efficiently, minimizing downtime and supporting operational productivity. The successful candidate will apply technical expertise to identify faults, perform repairs, maintain accurate records, and comply with safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform routine maintenance on diesel engines, transmissions, and related systems.
- Repair and service diesel-powered vehicles and machinery.
- Inspect and replace worn or damaged parts such as belts, hoses, and filters.
- Service fuel injection systems, braking systems, and exhaust systems.
Diagnostics and Troubleshooting
- Use diagnostic tools and software to identify mechanical and electrical faults.
- Diagnose engine failures, transmission issues, and hydraulic system problems.
- Conduct fault-finding and provide accurate repair recommendations.
- Ensure repairs are completed efficiently and effectively.
Preventative Maintenance
- Conduct regular inspections of vehicles and machinery.
- Implement scheduled servicing to reduce breakdowns and downtime.
- Recommend upgrades and component replacements to improve equipment reliability.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify potential maintenance requirements.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities comply with safety and environmental regulations.
- Adhere to industry-standard safety procedures when operating tools and equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Promote safe work practices at all times.
Record Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and services performed.
- Complete job cards, maintenance reports, and service logs.
- Report recurring mechanical problems and suggest improvements.
- Ensure documentation is completed accurately and timeously.
Inventory and Parts Management
- Monitor and manage spare parts, tools, and equipment.
- Assist with ordering and stocking required parts.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of mechanical components.
- Maintain workshop tools and equipment in good working condition.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Matric / Grade 12 Certificate or N3 qualification.
- Diesel Mechanic Trade Test Certificate.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar Diesel Mechanic position.
Language Requirements
- Fluent in English.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines.
- Sound understanding of transmissions and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
