Job Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking an Auxiliary Nurse to join its Clinic team in Bloemfontein and become part of its strategic talent pool.
The successful candidate will provide basic nursing care and pre-consultation support under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse or Professional Nurse. The role involves taking and recording vital signs, supporting patient administration, maintaining accurate records and ensuring patients receive professional and respectful care.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric or equivalent Senior Certificate.
- Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing or an equivalent recognised qualification.
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Auxiliary Nurse, where applicable.
- Active SANC registration and compliance with applicable requirements.
- 1–3 years’ experience in a primary healthcare, outpatient or clinic environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment
- Prepare patients for consultation.
- Confirm patient identity and record presenting complaints.
- Take and document vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, weight and height.
- Perform blood glucose testing where delegated and permitted by protocol.
- Identify abnormal observations and immediately report them to the Registered Nurse.
- Assist with basic screening according to clinic procedures.
Patient Administration & Records
- Verify patient information and demographics.
- Update electronic patient health records.
- Accurately capture pre-consultation information.
- Ensure required documents and consent records are completed.
- Provide accurate patient information to the Registered Nurse or consulting practitioner.
- Maintain confidentiality and proper record-keeping standards.
Health & Safety
- Maintain a clean, safe and hygienic clinical environment.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Practise appropriate hand hygiene and use PPE correctly.
- Clean and disinfect clinical equipment between patients.
- Report faulty equipment.
- Handle and dispose of clinical waste safely.
- Follow occupational health and safety requirements.
Communication & Teamwork
- Work collaboratively with Registered Nurses, doctors, reception staff and other healthcare workers.
- Communicate respectfully with patients and colleagues.
- Escalate clinical concerns promptly.
- Follow instructions from the Registered Nurse.
- Support efficient patient flow.
- Participate in training, meetings and quality improvement activities when required.
Scope of Practice
The Auxiliary Nurse must work strictly within the approved scope of practice and under appropriate supervision.
The successful candidate may not independently diagnose patients, prescribe medication, change treatment plans, provide clinical advice outside approved protocols or perform procedures outside their delegated scope.
Any abnormal vital signs, acute illness, serious symptoms, consent concerns or refusal of care must be escalated immediately to the Registered Nurse.
