Job Description
The Relief Blood Bank Technologist position at South African National Blood Service is responsible for performing specialised blood bank testing and laboratory functions to ensure safe and effective blood transfusion services. The role includes conducting compatibility testing, investigating transfusion reactions, verifying laboratory results, and maintaining high standards of quality and patient safety.
The technologist also supervises and verifies work completed by technicians, trainee technicians, and student technologists within the blood bank laboratory environment.
Main Responsibilities
Blood Bank Testing and Technical Functions
- Perform routine and specialised blood bank testing procedures.
- Conduct compatibility testing for blood transfusions.
- Perform post-natal investigations and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations.
- Carry out blood grouping and related laboratory procedures.
- Ensure accurate interpretation and reporting of test results.
Verification and Supervision
- Check and verify laboratory test results completed by:
- Registered Blood Bank Technicians
- Registered Trainee Technicians
- Registered Student Technologists
- Ensure all testing procedures comply with required standards and protocols.
Quality and Risk Management
- Maintain compliance with blood transfusion laboratory standards and procedures.
- Ensure quality assurance measures are followed at all times.
- Assist in reducing laboratory and transfusion-related risks.
- Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and records.
Laboratory and Equipment Maintenance
- Ensure laboratory instruments and equipment are properly maintained.
- Monitor equipment performance and report technical issues.
- Follow laboratory maintenance schedules and procedures.
Customer Relations and Communication
- Provide professional support to internal and external stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals and laboratory staff.

Education
- HPCSA Registered Medical Technologist (Blood Transfusion)
Experience
